First thing I recommend doing is auditing one month of expenses and compare to your income. I made a spreadsheet to help, or you can do with pen and paper. The goal is to go through all accounts to capture every expense! spreadsheet More on reddit.com

Google Sheets. Each month, you've fixed recurring bills like phone, electricity or Netflix sub etc. so those will go in the first few rows of the sheet. Then after that, the bottom rows will be all the variable expenses. So if today you drink 2x Starbucks + eat 1 burger, you list it in the sheet at night when you're home. Do this everyday. I try to be exact down to the cents. Then use the formula =sum() to tally how much for that month. Then next month, start a new section. More on reddit.com

I take an hour every couple months to drop in transactions (using bank export csv files) and get back a dashboard of spending, income, breakdowns by categories, comparison vs budget target, etc.
