It's likely select structural fir (probably douglas) 4x6 material. Pretty common to see it used in commercial construction projects so its not hard to come by at larger lumber yards, just maybe not box stores More on reddit.com

A few thoughts from a professional furniture maker joiner. If you have never used a bench before, you arent really sure what you will need. Planing and sawing require more lateral stability than you think. It cant be too heavy or too stable. The vice and hold-down setup is very personal, and can be very expensive. I can do just about everything (and more) that any vice and dog setup can do with 2 jorgensen wooden hand screws (the kind with 2 blocks of wood and 2 steel threads) and 2 big f clamps. Adding 2 more handscrews gives you insane versatility. Maybe concentrate on a rock solid bench with an eye towards adding vices and holdfasts later? More on reddit.com
