r/SEO on Reddit: What Are Some FREE SEO TOOLS (Actually Free) that are not Ahrefs & Semrush? (Not necessary to pay)
October 5, 2023 -

I’m a beginner in SEO looking to change careers and learn SEO.

Ahrefs & Semrush are the two “top dogs” of SEO tools as far as research is concerned.

Are there other tools that do a comparable job but actually free? (Some might be free but have limitations)

What are free tools to use that do a great job for SEO research where paying is not necessary?

But I also hear paying for Ahrefs or Semrush is worth it because of their value and “you get what you pay for” -which makes sense.

I’ve been testing out a few SEO audit tools lately that give instant website scores, keyword insights, and performance checks - no signup or setup required.

I noticed some newer tools are getting pretty good at analyzing on-page issues and technical SEO factors in seconds. Curious what others here are using in 2025 - especially for quick checks or client reports.

Do you stick to classics like Ahrefs, Semrush, or Screaming Frog, or are there any newer tools that impressed you lately?

(If anyone’s curious, I can share the one I recently tried that gives full SEO scores for free - not dropping a link since I know promo links aren’t allowed here.)

I'm looking for the best and free SEO tools to rank my website. What are some free tools you’ve actually found useful for improving rankings, especially for things like keyword research, on-page audits, or content suggestions?

Edit: So far I’ve tried a couple, Seobility for audits (pretty solid) and SEOPage.ai which builds full SEO landing pages automatically instead of just analyzing stuff.

Free tools that are usually part of some freemium model aren't too bad, here are some that might work for you. I don't want to sound preach-y, but remember tools can't get you out of understanding your audience and niche on a deeper level and creating content that will persuade them to buy from you. At the end of the day it's about sales and that knowledge is what will drive sales. Anyway, here's a list to help you out. Keyword Research: Ubersuggest Google Keyword Planner Keyword Tool Wordtracker Scout Answer the Public On-Page Optimization: Google Search Console Yoast MozBar Backlink Analysis: Ahrefs Backlink Checker OpenLinkProfiler Link Explorer Majestic Site Speed: Google PageSpeed Insights GTmetrix Pingdom WebPageTest YSlow Plugins like lazy load, hummingbird etc. Technical SEO: Google Search Console Screaming Frog SEO Spider Chrome DevTools Schema Markup Generator SEOquake If you need an SEO checklist too, PM me, I'll send it over.

I'm tired of those "top 50 SEO tools" listicles that are just affiliate link spam. Here are tools I actually use every week that don't cost anything:

Google Search Console - Obviously. If you're not checking this weekly, you're flying blind. Shows exactly what you're ranking for.

Answer The Public - Free searches are limited but great for finding question-based keywords people actually ask.

Ubersuggest - Neil Patel's tool. Free tier is surprisingly generous for keyword research.

PageSpeed Insights - Google's own tool. Tells you exactly why your site is slow.

Screaming Frog (free up to 500 URLs) - Best for technical audits. Finds broken links, duplicate content, missing metas.

Also Asked - Shows "People Also Ask" questions. Gold for content ideas.

The ones I DON'T recommend:

  • Those "instant SEO audit" tools that give you a score - usually garbage

  • Any tool that promises to "check your ranking" for free - they're harvesting data

  • Anything that spams you immediately after signing up

Paid tools worth it if you're serious:

  • Ahrefs (pricey but incredible)

  • Semrush (overwhelming but comprehensive)

  • Surfer SEO (for content optimization)

Do you always have a free SEO tool that you'd used for all of your projects and business?

I'm curating this list of free (absolutely free) tools used by founders, and here are some interesting free tools that I've discovered:

  • Ahrefs SEO Toolbar: A handy SEO assistant for your browser

  • Map of 48 SEO metrics: 48 insightful SEO metrics you should know

  • SEO Keyword Finder Tool: Find keywords for your business or website for free

  • SEO-Friendly URL Generator: Craft well-optimized, SEO-friendly URLs for free

  • SEO Analyzer: Analyze any site to detect critical errors and get actionable insights

  • Programmatic SEO Tool: Easily create content with dynamic data

  • SEO Keyword Database: A free Notion template to track my keywords

Would love to add more to the database if you have a free tool to recommend!

Cheers!

EDIT: I've pivoted to IndieHustle.co, where I publish interviews with indie founders running successful startups.

I recently launched https://jsonrepo.com which gives a set of free credits to try out the product and I'm planning on increasing the size of that free tier next week or so.
