What is an SSL certificate?
SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) or TLS (Transport Layer Security) is a security protocol that encrypts communication between a website and a web browser. It prevents unauthorized parties from accessing or seeing data exchanged between a site and its visitors.
SSL certificates are issued by a certificate authority (CA) to a website to authenticate its identity, letting browsers know that the website is secure.
How to renew an SSL/TLS certificate?
To renew an SSL/TLS certificate manually, you have to generate a new SSL certificate signing request (CSR), fill out the form, and install the latest version.
At Hostinger, you donโt need to do it manually, as we offer an automatic renewal feature for our free SSL certificates.
Which SSL/TLS certificate to choose?
All types of SSL/TLS protection provide the same encryption level. However, some sites may need certificates with higher levels of verification to offer better proof of legitimacy, showcasing theyโre a valid business, or to secure multiple domains at once.
So today I figured out how to install acme.sh to my hosted server space for my websites, and used acme to issue an SSL certificate and install it for a domain. It uses LetsEncrypt, and ZeroSSL for the default Certificate Authority (CA). Then I notice that ZeroSSL only allows a free 90 day certificate, and only 3 of those before you have to pay. Is there any way to generate actual free SSL certificates that do not expire for a year or more and that can be renewed free? I have heard that most hosting plans now provide free SSL certs, so is my hosting company just providing cheap hosting but making money on the backend by charging for SSL certs?
