I like using TTS to read my textbooks and assigned readings, I used this one software (Natural Reader I think) and it had AI voices for premium, for free accounts you only got 5 minutes a day. I found with those AI voices vs the normal robotic sounding TTS it helped me focus better. I'm curious if there is anything similar but free because I don't feel like paying a monthly subscription.

I'm not sure about desktop, but on Android, when I go into the Read Aloud settings, I'm able to choose from a few different voices. IIRC the Piper voices I had to individually download before I could use them, and IIRC I think they can be a bit slow to load. There are also Google voices, which sound more natural, but then you're sending things to corporate Big Brother. I'm using the voice supplied by the preferred TTS engine app on my phone (set at System > Languages > Text-to-speech output > Preferred engine after installing it) which I got from here: https://k2-fsa.github.io/sherpa/onnx/tts/apk-engine.html (I chose the amy-medium one). It unhelpfully shows up as "English" under "Standard Voices" in the Voice dropdown. More on reddit.com
