To top it off, language changes naturally over time, which means the pronunciation can start to diverge from the written form. The important thing to remember is that one sound (phoneme) is not inextricably tied to one letter. In fact, the same sound may even be elicited by a combination of different letters, like the single sound “ee” in the words “freed” and “lead.” · While English is notoriously difficult in this area, French also has multiple phonemes associated with the same letter.

How to pronounce the french “R”
Here’s my advice: the R doesn’t matter. You’ll be understood regardless of what R sound you use, as long as it’s an R of some sort and you put it in the right place. What matters much more in French is the pronunciation of vowels. Too many learners make the mistake of tunnel-visioning on the R while still pronouncing words like deux/doux/du or vent/vin/vont as ambiguous homophones instead of clearly different words. You will not be understood if you can’t pronounce your vowels clearly. More on reddit.com
