March 25, 2025 -
I’ve been landscaping in Central Florida for a while now, and I'm trying to incorporate more native plants to reduce maintenance and water use. I know some classics like Saw Palmetto and Coontie, but I'm looking for more ideas.
Any favorites that hold up well in the heat and don’t need constant watering?

I’ve found that most native plants are low maintenance. Water every day for the first two weeks after planting then every two days for another couple weeks. If you plant in summer, you don’t have to water too much because of the rain. Check out the Florida Native Plant Society page - there is good information about plants that are native to your particular county too https://www.fnps.org/plants Edit: Right plant, right place is a good rule of thumb. Plant the right plant for the right location ie sun-loving dry soil plant in the area with little irritation or low lying with a lot of sun etc

Here's the go-to list of easy to find and maintain natives: Grass: Pink Muhly Wildflower: Scarlet Sage, Spiderwort, Florida Greeneyes, Blue Porterweed, Goldenrod (different types for different purposes) Bushes: Coontie, Saw Palmetto, Firebush, Teabush, Snowy Squarestem, Highbush Blueberry, Beautyberry, Florida Privet I'm a native gardener with over 115 different species in my quarter acre yard in Central Florida. I'm happy to help answer any questions you may have. If you're only looking to plant a small selection of natives, I would recommend focusing on keystone species as they will have the most outsized impact: https://gardeningsolutions.ifas.ufl.edu/plants/ornamentals/floridas-keystone-plants/

Hey all. This area in my front yard has been an eye sore for years now and I’m ready to make it look nicer. I’ve never really landscaped before. Does anyone have any low maintenance suggestions to make it look nicer? The big tree in the middle is a Sycamore. Thanks so much in advance.

English or Cottage landscaping styles would be ideal for your Sycamore-centered yard. The English style uses shade-loving plants, like Ferns, while the Cottage style prefers dense, colorful flowers. Here are some ideas: https://app.neighborbrite.com/s/PHo2odffK6o
