I went from a Canon 550D to an X-T4 and I love it. Canon is a good ecosystem, but they don't seem to care about APS-C lenses, and for that reason alone, they are out for me. I would consider Sony for great third party lenses, Nikon for great first party, and Fuji if you want manual controls, good video, and good JPGs. I would choose other brands for sports and wildlife, although the 500 and 200mm are both excellent lenses. Answer from nvidiaftw12 on reddit.com

r/Cameras on Reddit: Fuji X-T4 or Canon R7 in 2025 ?
March 19, 2025 -

I am looking to get a new camera, my current on is a Canon 400D, with the 50mm f1.8 and a Sigma DG 70-300, the Sigma for me has been disappointing as its not very sharp and my images are usually out of focus slighlty.
I am going back and forth between the R7 and the X-T4, I am approaching this as a new purchase and and not tied to the Canon eco system as the lenses I have are fairly entry level and I am not considering them as value saved if I do decide to go Canon.

I am no in no way a professional, not even armature so there is no specific style I shoot, its a bit of everything, just looking for a good camera that will see me though for the next couple of years without me being frustrated and wishing I went with something else.

Both are the same price from what I have seen, the R7 is slightly better from a resolution in megapixels and the AF seems to track better from what I have read.
The lenses in the Canon range appear to ramp up in price quite considerably vs the Fuji which could be a limiting factor to enjoying the camera as this does not make me any income so buying an expensive lens is a significant commitment.
Most of the video reviews and reviews here I have seen are a couple of years old, so the question is what are the pro's and cons for each in 2025, has firmware resolved any of the issues seen previously and what would draw you to one or the other ?
Or is there something else to consider ?

Canon R7 vs Fuji xt3/xt4?: Camera, Lens and System Buying Advice Forum: Digital Photography Review
June 20, 2023 - I have a Rebel t3i with Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM Lens Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens · With the R7 I'd just need to get the EF-EOS R adapter and I wouldnt have to get a new lense right away. A Fuji 18-55mm would cost me about $275. So without doing exact math, the cost of a used xt3/xt4 plus a lense would be similar to buying the R7 with the mount.

I am starting a videography career and I would like your opinion of the best camera set (Camera + Lenses at least) to achieve the best results for low budget commercials (ads) and social media content (mainly interview, product unboxing or short movies). My budget is preferably around Preferably around $2000. Please give me any and all advice you have in regards to the best equipment that is affordable but professional.

If you're really that new to videography, I'd do what was suggested to me in almost the same scenario. I'll preface this with the fact that I was super deadset on buying new and starting with the best, and it was super difficult for me to do the right thing.. but super was helpful. I wouldn't buy a new camera if you're on a limited budget and you're hoping to start doing work with just that $2,000. Unless you have a separate budget for other things. Basic reasons why: a) You're going to have no idea what you're doing. It's better to learn with something still great/but older gen/cheaper so you can actually figure out what is important to you and in the future upgrade in the better direction. If you don't know the difference between what you'd want out of an R7 or GH5 or X-T4, it really should be a red flag in some ways that you're not ready for them. I desperately thought I needed a GH5, and read all the things and said "wow this is great I need XYZ feature like internal stabilization how could i ever use one without it" then ended up buying a used GH4 (which doesn't have stabilization) and realized I absolutely was better off learning WHY and WHERE I need stabilization by not having it on my camera and learning other important things to helping stable shots before having a cheat code. Simple speaking you just don't have any idea where your needs will be with a camera as a new videographer, and you're future proofing for types of shots you aren't ready or capable of doing. & b) You're going to spend more money than you can imagine for gear that will be absolutely non-negotiable for anything videography. Videography is expensive. I thought my camera was going to be the biggest bulk of my cost. Wrong! I have had to spend more than just my camera's value on tons of stuff to make basic shots look ALRIGHT. Stuff like lighting, tripocs, cages, recorders, audio, all cost insane amounts of money to get anything that will function reliable in a professional setting. A tripod alone can cost you $600-800, or a single key light. Even if you go cheap on everything, you at bare minimum will end up spending $500-1000 bucks just to be moderately prepared. Like.. do you ever want to shoot in the daylight? Better get yourself a filter or good luck getting good range. Of course you can rent some stuff, which is normal maybe for a key light or something, but still it all costs money. Money which you might be putting only into a camera/body, which you're better off getting used at a good discount, and using the rest to buy important accessories. Also, once you start shooting huge footage? Guess what bubba, you're gonna need a strong computer to run it, and aside from that? Storage space which will cost you MORE money. I shoot for an hour with 422 footage and end up with literally 300gb of files ungraded. The nice thing is usually if you're dealing with a used decent camera, you are often getting it from another enthusiast or videographer whose upgraded. (what I did) Which usually means they've taken good care of it, and sometimes will give you tips on it's use, have already messed with settings to achieve best results with that body, or it might come with extra batteries/accessories. All stuff that adds up. Like I mentioned, I got a GH4 with 2 lenses and 3 batteries for around $500 instead of paying $1,700 at the time for a GH5, which allowed me to spend money on an extra lens (also used, $900 lumix for $250), lighting, storage, tripod, etc. and still came under what I wanted to spend on a camera alone. And for the next 2-3 years continuously found week after week new things that I needed to buy to make basic shots or my cage/equipment work, and am thankful still to this day I didn't buy a GH5. I now also know for example, what is important for me in a camera, like the Auto-focus on Panasonic's suck so it makes it hard to self shoot, and the limited MFT lens selection is a con, and in the future will upgrade away from Panasonic. But I still to this day use my GH4 as my primary, still learn new things, and it's still not being used to 100% effectiveness I am sure. A GH5 would've been wasted on me.

Used GH5 mark I. If you’re just beginning you don’t need the latest models. OG GH5 will suit you fine. I used it professionally from the day it released in 2017 until February of last year. Served me very well. Spend as little as possible on a decent camera and try and put the rest of that money towards lenses because that will last you far longer in the system. I don’t understand why there are people here who are recommending you shell your entire budget out on a camera.

r/AskPhotography on Reddit: Canon EOS R or Fujifilm XT-4
February 8, 2023 -

Hello, I have few questions:) I am changing my Sony A7 system to a new. I need to decide which system will be better for me in long-time perspective, because I don’t want to change system again…

  1. I consider buying Canon EOS R (limited budget - I have to buy lenses too) or Fujifilm XT-3/XT-4. I mostly shoot portraits and street, almost no video. I know that it’s APS-C vs full frame comparison, but I wonder is it really that much difference, many people of fuji say that it isn’t that much in terms of low light shooting. Especially when you don’t compare side by side. Autofocus - opinions are divided, now I don’t know the difference between these two, so please help me which is better. What I like in Fuji is that all of the dials are on top and film simulation recipes (people say that JPEGs straight out of the camera are very good, that they don’t need to edit that much in post-production). The retro vibe is nice too 🤪. What I like in Canon it’s the variety of cheap, good lenses (EF) and the second hand availability. The RF system is more futureproof than the fuji I think.

  2. If the Canon wins I will have to buy lenses. I use the 85mm focal length mostly. I don’t have that much money to buy the RF 85 1.2L. So I was thinking about the EF lenses. Is it good idea to buy EF 85mm 1.4L IS USM with EF-RF adapter? I rejected the 1.2 because worse AF and image stabilization in 1.4 is welcomed. Or maybe is it better to buy EF 1.8 first, because it’s cheap and then collect more money to buy RF 85 1.2L?

I need your opinions!:)

The original EOS R is a few pegs down from the excellent AF of the later R3/5/6/7/10. I would say it might be closer than you think. The Fujis definitely have a much cooler vibe and user experience IMO but I would hesitate to call it better. That's preference more than anything. Fujis are pretty limited in the long fast telephoto area so if you ever get into sports, wildlife, or anything that needs a fast lens longer than 200mm you're kinda screwed.

Real question is why are you swapping off Sony? System swaps aren't exactly a spur-of-the-moment decision so what don't you like about the system you're shooting?

I mostly shoot portraits and street, almost no video.

. . . Photography isn’t my job, so I don’t earn money from photos and the camera won’t pay for itself. I am student so I can’t afford better body.

I'd consider downscaling more and getting a used Fuji X-T2 or X-T20.

I use the 85mm focal length mostly.

Get a Fuji 35mm f2 lens to start with, which is close to 50mm on a full-frame camera and is good for portraits and general-purpose shooting. When you save more money, a Fuji 56mm f1.2, which is an 85mm equivalent. Hot tip: there's a Viltrox 56mm f1.4 for Fuji that only costs $300.

I lean toward the X-T2 for the better specs and dual-card slots, which are good if you plan to get into paid work. If photography is strictly a hobby and you prefer portability, then I'd lean toward the X-T20.

If you do get the X-T20, I highly recommend watching the early videos of Omar Gonzalez. He started his YouTube channel after getting that camera and made a ton of tutorial videos about it.

Hope this helps.
