Small shrub/evergreen recommendations for birds [mostly full shade, zone 4-5]
Shade-tolerant evergreens for north facing garden bed?
Videos
I'm looking for a small shrub (5'H x 4'W max) or evergreen to plant in a mostly full shade area close to some bird feeders. It would be right behind a "zen" rock garden and would need to look decorative, not sucker too much, and hopefully serve to provide food or shelter for birds.
I'm considering these options, most of which I have no experience with.
Canada/American Yew (hard to find & seems to spread a lot)
Dwarf nativar of Hemlock (this was my best option, but Woolly Adelgid is a concern :/)
Maplealeaf Viburnum (potentially too large + viburnum leaf beetle?)
Leatherwood (not showy enough for the space?)
Dwarf Red Osier Dogwood nativar (not showy enough for the space?)
Clethra (never seen birds on it)
Dwarf Forthergilla (never seen birds on it)
Itea virginica (never seen birds on it)
Oakleaf hydrangea (too large unless there are smaller nativars)
I was hoping for something evergreen but there don't seem to be many options for shade. Do any of these sound like they could be a good fit or do you have other recommendations?
