I'm a Canadian full-stack developer and I've taught students at a Canadian bootcamp and followed them through their careers over the last few years. In terms of salary it is highly variable so keep that in mind. I've seen juniors take entry level jobs as low as $60k CAD and as high as $100k CAD, so that's on the order of around $30-$50 CAD/hour. After a few years at a company and entering the mid-level market it would not be unreasonable to see roles paying up to $125k. At the senior level it's all over the map depending on your responsibilities. I do freelance work now so my income is variable. I tend to bill fixed rate per scope rather per hour, so that can also change how my income is perceived. In the last two years I've had jobs pay as little as $30/hour effective to as high as $250/hour. It depends greatly on the scope, the value for the client, and whether I can use pre-existing skills/tools/knowledge to take shortcuts. Also whether I screw something up and have to spend time fixing it. In terms of what to learn in 2025 - I'll give you the advice I give all my students. Don't stress out about a stack or a specific tool. Collecting frameworks and libraries and languages on your resume is a bit of a shell game. What's more important is that you know how to build software to solve problems - that's the job. If there's a specific type of job you want or a specific company you want to work for, it can make sense to learn something to get your foot in the door there, but if you just wanna work, it's much better to gain experience building things. Take on projects; plan, develop, test, and deploy them. Bonus points if users actually use it, no matter how few. Yes. JS has shittons of jobs, way more than Python. Doesn't mean you can't find Python jobs, there are plenty of those too. You just can't compete with JavaScript. It's the web language. Everyone needs a webpage, everyone will always need a webpage. Every webpage needs updating, every webpage will always need updating. Every coder I know, including myself, have had to work with web at some point to make ends meet. But, another reason web work is plentyful is theres a lot of rotation. Very few people seem to want to stay in web work, which means positions rotate very quickly. Why is that?
