My boyfriend and I purchased a “galvanized fire ring” from Lowe’s as a cheap, makeshift firepit until we can get a professional to build one into the patio when we redo all the hardscaping. We passed on the other more expensive options as they’re so cheaply made and bottom out after just a few burns. We had our first burn last night in this ring and it was lovely, felt safe, until I read online that you should never heat up galvanized steel as the zinc fumes are super toxic.
My question is…why would they sell these things as firepits if they’re unsafe to use?? Are they not actually galvanized?

If you heat the ring until its glowing (which is how hot you would need it to be to cause the fumes you're worried about), then yea, you got problems. But if your fire is thst hot, you won't be able to get close enough to breath the fumes anyway.

I was always thought not to heat galvanized steel as it would produce toxic smoke. Yet i keep seeing galvanized firepit rings for sale. Is there a process that allows galvanized metal to be heated without causing fumes?

Its highly toxic. I dont know how they get away with it. Even on blacksmith sites they rant and rave about a small galvinized bolt being put in a forge. And that has 1% or less of the surface area of the fire ring.

Keep in mind that old smokes bbq pits are plated with something that looks like galvanized. I don’t know if it is, but it lasts like galv. There is an old story that floats around Houston that a fabricator made a bbq pit out of carbon steel and sent it to hot dip galvanizing. He cooked on it and killed part of his family. True or not I can’t say. But I do know a guy that all most melted zinc anodes down to make fishing weights.

Galvanized gives no benefit. However.the tiny mount of zinc oxide produced would be no problem . I would suggest a local weld shop may have some stock to make you something. Material at least 1/8" ( 3 mm) thick if you want it to last awhile. Stainless steel is pretty common, either the magnetic ( like auto exhaust) or non-magnetic. Stainless would not need to be as thick. Try a local junk yard.Bolts would be much more practical than trying to rivet. If you could find it, short length cut from large pipe like 24" diameter. Or , the old stand-by, 55 gal drum , cut off a foot of drum.

I answered your question. 1 Steel is a better choice than galvanized for the reason you gave. 2 A weld is preferred to bolts. What is it you need help with cutting steel or, using a drill bit? Making a circle is easy. You also need fire rated paint if you don't want rust. I also gave other options, including purchase of one, that will not rust for a long time. It also has no risk of fumes. Grass removal is also key. I guess you need to be more specific.
