r/gaming on Reddit: Game Informer is back!
February 19, 2025 -

They released a small teaser a few days ago, which was proceeded by a number of the editors on the site posting a picture that read "Continue?"

The site (dev.gameinformer.com) is completely broken at the moment, but what excellent news. I felt like there was a giant hole in the gaming industry since they went down. From the looks of it, the original staff is back, they have all of their archive, and they have a ton of articles that were done during the hiatus.

I always loved GI, even after I began shilling them for 12 years, and I'm pumped to see what they can do without some shitty corporation hamstringing them.

Edit: here's the official link to their YouTube channel with their "We're Back" video.

TL:DR - they talk about who's back (everyone), how they came back (Gunzilla Games bought them, they spun off into Game Informer Inc., and will operate independently and without interference), backdated content is on the site now (GotY 2024), as well as content/reviews from the last couple of months, magazine subscriptions will be coming back (more info later), stay tuned, and they're happy they're back.

r/gamecollecting - A rant on GameStop's Game Informer magazine subscription
April 18, 2012 -

Hey all.

Just went into a GameStop to renew my Powerups Rewards card for the Game Informer magazine. Realistically, I don't have the card for any other reason. I don't buy anything at GameStop because of the elitist attitude the employees have. I just like getting the magazines sent to me in the mail. $15 for a year's worth of colorful pages full of video game news is a good deal to me. I wish I could just renew my subscription online rather than go to a store, but it's not that big of a deal.

Anyway, I just had a disagreement with a GameStop employee. He tried setting me up with a digital print of the magazine because that's what the computer gives as the default for renewing your subscription unless you ask specifically for a print copy. He got annoyed with me when I wasn't having it and gave me some spiel on how environmentally friendly it is to get a digital subscription over a print subscription. Bull fucking shit. You just don't want to send me anything through the mail because you save money sending out emails instead.

I told him I liked saving my magazines. Years down the road they're especially interesting. I mean, for those of you that collect Nintendo Power magazine, you know how awesome it feels to read columns about games decades old. Also, the cover art is pretty bad ass. I'd much rather have a shelf of gaming magazines than have to read them online.

It really rubbed me the wrong way that the employee tried making me feel like an idiot for not wanting him to sign me up for the digital edition. What's with GS employees and their constant snobbery towards customers who don't want to pre-order new games or get digital editions of their magazine? It just really annoys me.

Okay, rant over.

As a former employee of the big bad company, I can only think that either you have been seriously unlucky with who you've dealt with, or there has been a change in how the company's thoughts on the subscription in the year since I've left.

GameStop's number one concern with getting you to put $15 down towards the membership is to get you to come back to the store. The cost of sending you the magazine is so minimal compared to the advertising they get to put right in front of you for just about every product and deal in their store. And the 10% discount was just another way to entice you back into their stores for the products the show you.

My manager used to keep a huge stack of the magazines under each register, and we would never throw out old ones. Whenever someone got the subscription, which is the only thing we were supposed to hawk, not digital or physical, we gave them as many months worth of magazines as they had wanted. Even some people who came in and asked were given magazines, new and old, just so they could see what was coming to the store.

Then again, my manager was awesome and I still stand by my opinion that GameStop is not the worst company ever. The trade program and the bloated prices on popular games are obviously not ideal for people in the know like us collectors, but for the average "I want it now" consumer, it could be a lot worse.

Sorry for the response rant, but I just feel some sort of kinship with GameStop employees since my store had a really awesome crew.

Seems like most rants have to do with the employees at Gamestop. With as much as people complain I've got no idea how they stay in business. Heck most of the times when I have gone into one to buy a game I'm looking for, they usually tell me they're sold out of it.
