r/asoiaf on Reddit: Netflix is probably going to buy WB. What would this mean for the future of the Game of Thrones cinematic universe? [Spoilers Extended]
December 5, 2025 -

For those that didn't know, WB owns the Game of Thrones IP, and if Netflix buys out WB they would become the new owners. In my opinion,

The good: Netflix might be more likely to produce an animated remake of the books.

The bad: They are also more likely to produce an avalanche of GoT content slop with no source material.

The ugly: George will inevitably become even more distracted by all the shiny spinoffs and our chances of ever seeing TWOW sink even lower than they already were.

r/gameofthrones on Reddit: What does Netflix’s acquisition of Warner Bros. mean for the Game of Thrones franchise?
December 5, 2025 -

Just the title. And your thoughts as well.

I’ll be honest, I’m a little worried. I think the thing we love so much about this universe is its rawness, it’s dark, and it doesn’t hold back. I just don’t know if netflix will hold true to the identity of what this universe is.

On a side note it also makes me worry for the way movie theaters will be impacted, the new Harry Potter remake, DC, etc.

Answer (1 of 8): Well no. Game of Thrones is not available on Netflix and I am inclined to say that I understand the struggle. It's available on Disney+ and there was no way I would have taken a subscription for that.

December 7, 2025 - But we're at least 5 years away from anything Netflix-produced seeing the light of day and it's a coin flip whether we'll even have Winds by then. By "butchering" I mostly imagine them flooding it with miniseries and TV-films that are all over the place in terms of the time periods and events they're covering, and aren't super concerned about adhering to established canon. That's the treatment that Witcher has gotten outside of the main show. As for games, there is not a single chance in hell that this is good news for ASOIAF video game representation.
