Several free games on PC offer experiences similar to Grand Theft Auto 5, particularly in open-world exploration, criminal activities, and mission-based gameplay. Grand Theft Auto and Grand Theft Auto 2 are available for free on Steam and provide a classic top-down, 2D take on the franchise’s core mechanics, including completing missions, earning respect, and exploring cities like Liberty City and San Andreas.
MadOut2, often referred to as the "Russian GTA," is another free-to-play option on Steam that features an open-world setting, crime-driven storylines, and encounters with both mafia and police. APB Reloaded is a free massively multiplayer third-person shooter on Steam where players can choose to play as either an Enforcer or a Criminal, offering action-packed gameplay with character customization and weapon variety.
For a more unique twist, Rustler, also known as Grand Theft Horse!, is a free-to-play game set in the Wild West, featuring quirky humor, anachronistic elements, and gameplay involving stealing horses, using swords or crossbows, and battling gangs.
Additionally, Rigs of Rods is a free and open-source vehicle simulation game that emphasizes realistic damage modeling, making it appealing for players who enjoy driving and stunts in open environments. On the browser-based platform Pacogames, numerous free games like Cars Thief, Grand Action Crime: New York Car Gang, and Gangsta Island: Crime City emulate the GTA formula with driving, crime, and open-world elements.
While some of these titles may not match GTA 5’s scale or graphical fidelity, they provide accessible alternatives for players seeking similar gameplay without cost.

Gta5 and Minecraft (if that count) are the only 2 big games I ever finished I have so much fun play GTA5 I even beaten it 3 times. But when it started to get repetitive I started to find new game (because online is boring for me) I bought resident evil (2,5,7) Assassin’s Creed (Odyssey,Syndicate) I had a bit of fun playing Odyssey but I just don’t like the repetitive quest, I did also bought all others GTA games none of that interested me even RDR2.
I have also tried games like Stardew Valley, CIV6 Counter strikes which were fun for a while for a week then I never opened those again.
I do like open world game can be story but one that doesn’t force me to do (unless it important for story).
I doesn’t like game that doesn’t provide ability to choose what to do and doesn’t provide more than one way of playing the game.
PS I doesn’t have PC only a laptop which can run some games it only ever get laggy when I tried odyssey so it would be nice if the game is pre 2018
