I did a bunch of reading online and read a lot of good things about the Winkbeds (Luxury Firm), and Purple mattresses, and a couple of other online brands and then found a store near me that carries all these brands so figured I'd go check them out in person.
When I got there, there was a very "aggressive" sales guy, that told me memory foam is not that good compared to memory gel because of durability issues (?), and that the Winkbed and Helix mattresses are shit, and he showed me 3 different Mlily mattresses. It was definitely a red flag in my head that he kept showing me Mlily mattresses. Not that they weren't comfortable but still.
So now I'm pretty confused because I read some good reviews about hybrid mattresses with memory foam, but in the store, it did look like the beds with memory foam had edges that were a little more beaten, and he mentioned that the beds he showed me had more spread out support whereas the other ones had support in the middle but not the edges.
Any thoughts on all of this?

The only difference between memory foam and gel memory foam is that the gel has cooling properties. It makes no difference to the durability of it. I would steer clear of aggressive sales people. He probably was desperate to sell something or maybe got paid more commission for the brand he was recommending. Memory foam and polyfoam can last for years but it depends on the density and your weight and how you use the mattress. Higher density foams last longer like 4 lb memory foam. You can also get softer or firmer foams with different ILDs but most companies won't tell you what their ILDs or densities are. Some show it on their websites like Silk and Snow shows densities. DLX mattresses show ILDs and densities and you can choose the layers and firmnesses you want with that company as their mattresses are more customizable. If you know what feel of mattress you like, like memory foam, latex, hybrid or spring then you can go from there and search which brands you might like if you want to order one. I personally wouldn't buy from a mattress store again as I got one that had an exchange only policy and after having to do a few exchanges because of defective mattresses I ended up selling my last exchange to my inlaws and ordering from companies online that at least have trials and free returns.

Long story short - "cooling gel" is a marketing gimmick to the 10th degree. This mattress has horrible reviews for a reason - Ghostbeds are not known for their reliability nor their comfort. This is an opinion. While latex is definitely a cooler sleeping material(i have an all latex bed and can testify to its effectiveness), cooling is created through the entire composition - having a single thin layer of latex will not correct Memory foams inherent lack of breathability. 2" at most is certainly not enough to keep you cool. This is why you see a lot of hybrid mattresses designed to have an open cell design to improve airflow through each layer and it is rarely seen with memory foam due to its nature. More on reddit.com

I’d say 95% of the “cooling, gel infused, bamboo, avocado, green tea, etc” is simply marketing jargon. This is especially the case once you have a mattress protector and sheets on the mattress.
