1- You likely have free credit from google. They offer hundreds of dollars in credit for accounts that sign up for the API. (Or at least, they used to do that last year, I’m assuming they’re still doing it) 2- As far as I am aware, there are no special limits. You can use it as much as you want until the credits run out 3- Gemini 2.5 Flash is free PS: those credits have a time limit. Of course! Sonnet is 2.4x more expensive, yet not as good. The price was expected by everybody, right? This has been an "Experimental" model. This was the price of Gemini 1.5 Pro, which I expected 2.5 Pro to become. I'm actually relived they didn't raise their Pro pricing. If I want to save money I can use Llama 4 Maverick, Deepseek V3.1/R1, and for a while the 2.5 Pro experiemental model will still be avilable. For me this is a good thing. I am using Gemini 2.5 Pro via API calls for a project I am working on. I started with a free trial of Google One which seemed to give me access to Gemini 2.5 Pro in the online chat interface, but I assumed the API access was also included in the $20/month. I then unknowingly clicked my way out of the trial and into a fully paid account (maybe I'm dumb or maybe the interaface options were misleading).
I now understand that there are different input/output costs per request (based on the amount of tokens in each request) and also that I have a $300 credit holding over on my Google One account from the trial. But I haven't seen any charges appear in the Google AI Studio Dashboard or the Cloud Console despite seeing some traffic appear.
My questions are:
Why am I not seeing charges come through, despite making API calls (it's been a few days)?
Are there daily limits below which I won't get charged, even using Gemini 2.5 Pro via API calls and having a paid account?
What options do I have to use some Gemini model for free via API (not AI Studio)?

You're probably using the free API, it's got like 100 requests per day, or maybe it's cause charges take up to 3 days to process, in my case and from what I've seen, if you only spent cents, you might not even notice. And no, if you use the paid API, you get charged from the first call, if you use the free one, you get 100 free calls to Gemini 2.5 Pro and like 250 to Gemini 2.5 Flash daily. And for your last question, AI Studio is pretty much the only free way to use Gemini via the API, whether that's using the free API or the free $300 Google Cloud credit on Vertex/Google AI Studio Paid API.
