German Numbers: How to Count From 1 to 100 - Busuu
Since ‘v’ makes an ‘f’ sound in German, you can remember that this starts with the same sound as four in English. It’s also very close to the English word ‘fear’, with more breath when you pronounce the consonants. ... Fünf starts with an ‘f’ sound just like the English ‘five’. Remember, the ü sound is pronounced like you’re saying ‘eww’ except with your mouth wider open.

r/German on Reddit: Acceptable number order, like 5 and 50 vs 55
October 11, 2024 -

I'm working to learn German. I vacation for a month or two every year in Germany, and while I don't regularly bludgeon German ears during my trips, I do try on occasion. In particular with numbers, especially with Germans willing to help with my horrible pronunciation.

One thing that regularly comes up though is numbers. When I try saying, say, fünfundfünfzig, so far everyone has told me fünfzigfünf is just fine, that I don't need to say 5 and 50, I can say 55.

Is this a case where my pronunciation is simply so horrible that they want to get past listening me to as quickly as possible, or are Germans (or perhaps regions in Germany) cool with either number order?

edit, additional content: To be clear, in these conversations, the listeners are speaking up and is telling me that fünfzigfünf is acceptable without being asked.

September 12, 2024 - In German, the root number is added to the suffix -zig to represent that number in the tens place. This matches exactly how the root number is added to the suffix “-ty” in English like in the number “ninety.” · [root number] + -zig · fünf + -zig = fünfzig · five + -ty = fifty · Keep in mind that the -s in sechs is dropped for sechzig (sixty) and the -en in sieben is dropped for siebzig (seventy) for a smoother pronunciation.
