Enable USB Boot in Gigabyte Motherboard - blackMORE Ops
January 15, 2016 - Rufus did it for me and doing F12 and choosing it from HDD+. I made a bootable Windows 10 using the Microsoft utility that downloads and creates the USB boot drive and my desktop with a Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R motherboard couldn’t see it.

Gigabyte motherboard won't boot from USB
Hey guys, I've ran into a spot of trouble with my motherboard. It is a gigabyte GA-MA785GT-UD3H motherboard using bios version F4. I can go into the boot menu and the option for the USB is there but it won't boot. I know the flash drive works so it must be something to do with the bios. More on forum.level1techs.com

Can't boot from USB on Gigabyte Motherboard
Just press F12 repeatedly as it starts up and you'll get the boot device selection screen. But if the USB isn't showing up in the menu in the BIOS itself, odds are it's not been created correctly (the Windows Media Creation Tool will create a bootable UEFI partition on the drive, which sounds like it's missing). How did you create the drive for Windows? You really need to be using a Windows machine and run the Windows Media Creation Tool, as tools like Rufus don't always result in bootable drives when using the Windows ISO for some reason. The USB functions are already enabled by default in the BIOS, so all you have to do is either change the first boot device to USB-HDD or better yet use the F12 Key to manually boot the USB Flash drive. When the BIOS starts to Post, press F12 a few times > this will access the BIOS Boot Menu > select USB HDD > Select the USB Flash > Start the installation... before this, make sure you have connected the USB Flash drive to a USB 2.0 port... USB 3.0 will cause issues before installing the USB 3.0 drivers. When the BIOS starts to Post, press F12 a few times > this will access the BIOS Boot Menu > select USB HDD > Select the USB Flash > Start the installation I get the BIOS Boot Menu, I use the arrow keys to highlight "USB-HDD", then hit enter, and then the USB-HDD is ignored and Windows boots from the Hard Disk. Any suggestions? I know my USB port works, because I used it today to create a bootable USB device. Sorry for the delay in answering... I've been away for quite a while and only check occasionally for answers I may need to respond to. You may have solved the issue by now but in case you haven't, try the following. 1. You may need to enable/turn on USB support in the BIOS 2. You may also need to enable Legacy USB support 3. Set the USB-HDD as the first boot drive 4. Press key F12 to select USB-HDD as the boot device 5. Both 3 and 4 may need to be used to boot from the USB-HDD, and the USB flash drive should have obviously been made bootable. 6. You can also try disabling the HDD, and CD/DVD drive to stop them from interfering in the USB-HDD boot process, then make the USB-HDD drive as the first boot device, and use the F12 key to select booting from the USB-HDD drive. 7. If none of these suggestions works, try with a different USB flash drive, update the BIOS, set the BIOS to failproof default settings. 8. Still nothing?, try a different Bootable USB drive maker application.

Use Plop Boot Manager.

Materials

2 computers
1 computer with the problematic (GIGABYTE) motherboard
1 computer for write operations to flash drives
2 USB FDDs
1 (tiny capacity) flash drive for Plop Boot Manager
1 (larger) flash drive for the anticipated boot disk
1 open USB slot

Setup

  1. Download Plop Boot Manager. Get plpbt-x.x.x.zip (where x.x.x is the latest version number).
  2. Extract the .zip file you downloaded.
  3. In the folder resulting from the extraction, find plpbt.img.
  4. Unmount your tiny FDD.

  5. Write the file (Plop Boot Manager) to the beginning of your tiny FDD with this:

    Linux: sudo dd if=plpbt.img of=/dev/sdn

    Mac: sudo dd if=plpbt.img of=/dev/diskn

(Assumes that you changed directories (cd plpbt-*) into the extracted folder. Replace the value of the of= parameter with the path of your particular flash drive. Be careful with this command by checking it for correctness!)

Windows: Use Win32 Image Writer to write the .img file.

  6. If you haven't already, write the bootable operating system to your other flash drive like normal.

Usage

  1. Plug the Plop Boot Manager FDD into the computer with the problematic (GIGABYTE) motherboard.

  2. Reboot or power on that computer. On GIGABYTE motherboards, press F12 at the BIOS splash.

  3. Select the Plop Boot Manager FDD for booting. On GIGABYTE motherboards, choose either USB-ZIP or USB-HDD. The flash drive is actually recognized as a floppy, not a regular flash drive.

  4. Plop Boot Manager should now be running. There may be a starfield screensaver in the background.
  5. Plug in the other FDD. (Exchange with the Plop Boot Manager FDD if you're out of slots.)
  6. Select the flash drive option from the Plop Boot Manager menu.

Now the bootable flash drive operating system should be starting up!

As a bonus, there are other uses for your Plop Boot Manager FDD now, and it can be your "key" to other possible booting issues you might encounter.

  1. In the BIOS, ensure you have Integrated Peripherals > USB Legacy Enabled.
  2. Also ensure you have Integrated Peripherals > USB Storage Enabled.
  3. Set Boot Order to HDD, None, None.
  4. With the USB Boot Drive inserted, Reboot.
  5. Hit F12 at the Boot Screen to bring up the Boot Menu.
  6. Choose HDD+ on the Boot Screen, not any of the USB options!
  7. Choose your USB Device on the next screen.
