Unreliable Z790 motherboards
Is the Gigabyte Z790 D AX DDR5 worth the upgrade or is there a better option?
Videos
I’m looking at a 14700K build and will need a new Z790 DDR 5 motherboard to go with it. However, the Amazon reviews for Asus and MSI boards are littered with reports of them being faulty from the start, including comments about their processors being wrecked by them. Does anyone have an opinion or buying advice ? Thanks.
So I'm looking at upgrading my motherboard from an Asus b660m-a wifi d4 to a Gigabyte Z790 D AX or potentially anything else. I have essentially swapped out almost everything from my "Ready to Run" pc and this is the last piece which should semi future proof this PC for a couple years. I am at a loss with Motherboards and don't know what I should get. I know I want a 3rd M.2 slot to finally get rid of my old HDD and bringing the Ram up to the newest standard, would be awesome for longevity. But aside from that I am at a loss, all the word salad on the specs for motherboards is confusing.
Edit: I only upgraded the CPU from an i5 to an i7 late last year. Don’t intend to upgrade it until I build a brand new system in a few years time
Edit 2: After consideration and additional research I’m going to go with a different board. Gigabyte B760 DS3H AX. It’s a DDR4 board and based off what I’ve seen comparing DDR4 3600 MHz to DDR5 7200 MHz, the difference is maybe a couple percentage points at best. I’ll still get the better RGB and fan controlling software I want from Gigabyte and the USB-C port at the back I want plus the 2.5gb lan port. In the next couple years when DDR6 is likely available I’ll do my big upgrade but until then, no point wasting $700 on an upgrade that’s a negligible boost
Recommendations or advice would be very appreciated
I have:
CPU - i7 12700KF LGA1700
Graphics - RTX 4080 Super
Ram - 4x 16GB DDR4 3200 MHz (I will be swapping this out for DDR5 if the board needs it)
Storage - 2x M.2 2280 and a 3.5" internal hard drive - SATA
Cooling - 5x case fans and 2x CPU fans (probably a little overkill with the fans but I had extras)
Power - DA850R gold
Case - Lancool 216 (explains 3x of my fans)
PS: I am also doing this to build my friend (who is new to PC gaming and doesnt want or need top of the line parts, he's happy with playing at 1080p HD) my old pc, so he can stop playing on a laptop
I'm building a new gaming PC and currently looking at DDR5 compatible motherboards. Most boards compatible with the rest of my build are priced around $350-$450ish (Canadian) but the GIGABYTE Z790 UD AC LGA 1700 Intel Z790 ATX board is around ~$270 and I can't see any particular reason for such a steep price difference. There's also pretty much no reviews out there which always makes me a bit nervous. For comparison, one of the other boards I was looking at was the MSI MAG Z790 TOMAHAWK WIFI LGA 1700 Intel Z790 which is ~$430.
Anyone have any insight? Is the gigabyte board a good value or should I just spend more on another board?
Hello everyone!
Recently I've mounted my first full brand-new PC and I got an Aero G as my motherboard, as it is better for creators and I'm a graphic designer. I got a full rig for gaming as well so it's all set and working fine.
I had some trouble trying to activate XMP tho. My CPU is an Intel 13900k and my two memory sticks are a Kingston Fury DDR5 5600MHz CL40 32 GB (2x16). As the Mobo standard speed is 4800MHz, I tried to activate XMP and restart, but the computer soon stopped showing video. I tried to restart a few times without success, and also tried to change the slots, but I've only put one of the sticks. It came back on and I deactivated XMP, so I got the other stick back on too (They were on A1-B1 slots before, but now they're now on A2-B2 slots and working fine).
My BIOS version is F4. I've had read online that in order to activate XMP successfully I have to update my BIOS (most recent version is F9), is that true? Which I consider weird because if I had to update the BIOS the XMP profile wouldn't even show up on the setup, as a security matter.
I've never updated a BIOS before, so here I ask:How can I update it without a risk of losing the mobo? Can I do a backup of the BIOS?I also intend on a near future buy other two 64 GB RAM sticks (2x32) to get 96 GB of RAM and a better performance. If I possibly need to update the Bios to activate XMP, will it still work?
Thanks in advance for the answers.
