r/gigabyte on Reddit: Z690 Aorus Pro DDR5: Only one DIMM slot works, 28 54 C2 C3 C4 error codes on repeat for faulty slots
December 20, 2021 -

Long story short, recently brought a new CPU (i7-12700K) and motherboard (Z690 Aorus Pro DDR5). Only one DIMM slot works, which is the one furthest from the CPU. This is not the recommended one to use according to the manual, but it's the only one that works. I have two individual sticks of RAM (2 x 16 GB Kingston Fury DDR5-5200), both work, but only in one slot. The other three slots do not work (tried and tested for both sticks).

Things I've done to try and resolve:

  • Q-Flash to the latest bios from Gigabyte's site

  • Enable XMP (after successful boot in one slot and then adding sticks to the other slots) to both profiles

  • Checked and reseated CPU

  • Made sure CPU cooler was not fixed too tight to the MOBO

  • Reset CMOS

  • Manually gone back to BIOS settings

In summary, the computer boots fine when a single stick of RAM is in a specific single slot. Otherwise, it repeatedly tries to boot with 28, 54 C2, C3, C4 error codes. It's either the motherboard (likely) or CPU (due to memory controller).

Any help at all is appreciated.

December 14, 2021 - Same exact thing I had happening on my Z690 Ultra with not getting past code 54 before I updated the BIOS with Qflash. My advice is to download the latest BIOS to USB and follow Qflash instructions.

r/gigabyte on Reddit: Z690 Aorus Ultra post code error 54, Q-flash isnt working

SOLUTION F5c Bios file is bad, use F5b, and try again

currently getting windows installed, is booted, and he are looking GOOD
Proof of live, because its only fair

finally got all the cords pieces and adapters in for my super build

i managed to score a Gskill Z5 rgb PC-6000 and Aorus Ultra combo on newegg a while back..

turn it on and the fans spin a bit, stop, the post codes cycle, they stop at 54, then they go back to 00.. does taht on a repeat till the PC cycles itselffrom what i can tell 54 means its a memory initialization thing, i tried reseating and swapping slotsnothing

several people on internet says that they have fixed their issue by flashing BIOS, not posting, so not getting a BIOS, so i cant F12 my way in.. but thats what Q-flash is for, right?

follow the steps to the letter, format thumbdrive to fat32uncompress zipfile, take the big file rename it GIGABYTE.bin as per the z690 ultra's special features section. drop that on the root of empty, unnamed USB driveplug in USB, turn on PSUhit q-flash button and everything flickers for a second, and then nothingfigure i should try with everything outemergency triage, pull CPU, RAM, and GFX cardplug in the thumb drive again, flick on the power and.. nothingnothing flickers.. nothing happensgut computer, all m.2 drives are out, all USB headers unplugged.. down to the base level this guy has his athttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cQLYROKJ_Qtried with just the 24 pin. nothing the qflash button doesnt make the cupoter turn on like it does in the videos

at this point i try clearing the CMOS, nothing happenswhen i hit the power button i notice that the CPU light is lit and then just stops, i notice that if i hold the power down for 5 seconds it goes to a shutdown state where when i hit the q-flash button, the computer WILL power on, and ill see the light on the thumb drive flicker for a second, go blank, and then, nothingi have tried naming it different variations of gigabyte.bin, i have tried multiple old thumb drives, some old 1gb and 2gb usb 2.0 drives (2 are old sandisk ones, but none of those dont work, ive tried FAT32, ive tried FAT with 16k blocks, i have tried holding the qflash button.. so far the only thing that makes the button do more than nothing is the aforementioned "power button held down till it turns off" state.but i have yet to see that amber light next to the qflash button light up or flash yet

i am under the impression that i have managed to get it to a state where it looks at the USB card for something, doent like it, and then stops.., but i dont know how to make that work at this point, and im running out of ideas

Thanks

Motherboard error codes explained - For Gigabyte, ASUS, and MSI motherboards
February 5, 2024 - Thankfully, motherboard manufacturers use a standardized set of codes for the most part, so code 55 will mean the same on an ASUS Z690 motherboard as it will on a Z790 motherboard from the same manufacturer.

So for anyone who’s interested, the errors in the pic seem entirely related to the NIC. It intermittently works as it is now, and when it doesn’t, or when I disable it in the BIOS, the errors aren’t present. Unfortunately, a dead onboard NIC is the least of my problems at this point.

What is your parts list? Consider formatting your parts list.

Gigabyte Z690 Aorus Ultra DDR5 Motherboard from recent sale

i5-13600K

G.Skill Flare X5 Series 16GB x 2 RAM

Corsair AX860i

500GB Samsung 980 M.2

2TB Samsung 980 M.2

GTX 1080ti

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

No bios/splashscreen at boot. Error code 12 (not specified in manual). GPU LEDs and system fans would go on. Monitor says no display and will shut off. keyboard and mouse LEDs not going on.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

  1. flashing new BIOS using the Q-Flash feature. Can’t tell if it took or not. Attempted with 3 flash drives. LED flashes for about 30 seconds then shuts down each time. FAT32, renamed file as “GIGABYTE.bin”, etc. tried without mobo and nothing seemed to happen

  2. moving Ram into different slots. I would get different error codes in another configuration and it would cycle off on its own. error codes around 54 or so, that was something to do with memory. Was more stable when I got error code 12 and would stay on. But cannot find description of it.

  3. Pulled CMOS battery out overnight - nothing different

  4. Removed GPU - nothing different

  5. Removed CPU - fans go on but no error code shows, no display. Not sure if this mobo can bios without a CPU or not.

Right now what I think I will try:

  1. double check all power is connected correctly (MOBO has a 4-pin connection that I had to use an 8pin connection from my PSU to connect to it but it clicked in fine, just overhangs one side).

  2. order new RAM

  3. confirm all m.2 are connected right. disconnect and see if they do anything different.

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

Replace this text with your answer.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Right now my CPU is not installed anymore. I will reinstall it with the cooler, and try some more things. Unless one of you can offer up some better ways to troubleshoot this. I know I need to update BOIS

any suggestions to help narrow down my issues would be greatly appreciated! id hate to have to return anything, but it is what it is. Hoping this is the right place to post this.

Edit:

Fixed it! Had to remove cmos battery overnight, actually short the pins, disconnect everything except power to load a new bios. Loaded an old bios that is "incompatible" with the new 13 gen cpus. Connected ram in configuration that gave me errors before, connected cpu, and it booted! Was able to install and get everything else going.

Doesn't make sense because this is supposed to be a bad bios for this cpu, but it's working. All yo and running. Thanks for the ideas!
