I bought the Z690 version of this last week at ME for $252 after price beat because CC had it on sale for $260. Maybe the Z790 version is ATL, but this isn't much of a deal. Unless you really want to run 4 M.2 NVMe drives at PCIe4, the Z790 is an overall component downgrade compared to the Z690: 2 less SATA ports: 4 vs. 6. (However, if the 4th M.2 slot is used on the Z690, 2 of the SATA ports are disabled.) Audio codec is ALC897 instead of ALC1220. No DisplayPort out for the iGPU. 60A twin 8+8 phase VRM instead of 70A direct 16-phase VRM. My Z690 mobo is great. There were reports of memory training issues, but the first thing I did was update the BIOS, and I had no problems at all. More on reddit.com

I haven't checked in detail, but their "performance" should be the same on paper aside of minor differences like supported ram speed at highest levels. The only factor would be amount and variety of connections offered. If you do not need or plan to have expansive amount of connections, but rather a simple setup of couple monitors you should go with the brand you trust in. I personally always go with Asus Strix motherboards, because I trust in Asus manufacturing quality and Strix's models material quality. And throughout the years of personal experiences I tend to believe that quality of motherboards matters for the longevity of the system and smooth work over time and wouldn't go for a 100$ motherboard(if I have the budget to of course) that on paper performs the same.
