So I'm looking at upgrading my motherboard from an Asus b660m-a wifi d4 to a Gigabyte Z790 D AX or potentially anything else. I have essentially swapped out almost everything from my "Ready to Run" pc and this is the last piece which should semi future proof this PC for a couple years. I am at a loss with Motherboards and don't know what I should get. I know I want a 3rd M.2 slot to finally get rid of my old HDD and bringing the Ram up to the newest standard, would be awesome for longevity. But aside from that I am at a loss, all the word salad on the specs for motherboards is confusing.
Edit: I only upgraded the CPU from an i5 to an i7 late last year. Don’t intend to upgrade it until I build a brand new system in a few years time
Edit 2: After consideration and additional research I’m going to go with a different board. Gigabyte B760 DS3H AX. It’s a DDR4 board and based off what I’ve seen comparing DDR4 3600 MHz to DDR5 7200 MHz, the difference is maybe a couple percentage points at best. I’ll still get the better RGB and fan controlling software I want from Gigabyte and the USB-C port at the back I want plus the 2.5gb lan port. In the next couple years when DDR6 is likely available I’ll do my big upgrade but until then, no point wasting $700 on an upgrade that’s a negligible boost
Recommendations or advice would be very appreciated
I have:
CPU - i7 12700KF LGA1700
Graphics - RTX 4080 Super
Ram - 4x 16GB DDR4 3200 MHz (I will be swapping this out for DDR5 if the board needs it)
Storage - 2x M.2 2280 and a 3.5" internal hard drive - SATA
Cooling - 5x case fans and 2x CPU fans (probably a little overkill with the fans but I had extras)
Power - DA850R gold
Case - Lancool 216 (explains 3x of my fans)
PS: I am also doing this to build my friend (who is new to PC gaming and doesnt want or need top of the line parts, he's happy with playing at 1080p HD) my old pc, so he can stop playing on a laptop
