Public books are visible to everybody but only collaborators can update it. Private books are visible only by the collaborators. You can switch your book from public to private and the inverse. Paid books can only be public. Home and Explore pages only list books that are already successfully built.

I have created a book using GitBook. I want only specific set of people to be able to read my book. These set of people should be able to access it by logging in somewhere or by any other method. How shall I achieve this? Even if the link is public, how shall I restrict the users who see it? (I don't want to add them in the collaborators list) ... So in your case, providing your book is private (private GitHub repo), an access key is a solution, but you cannot easily control the set of people using it; ie: you can only control the set you are giving the token to.

With share links, you can create unique, private links to your docs to send to specific user groups. You can revoke a link at any time, so if a specific group no longer needs access to your docs it’s easy to remove them.

Cascading effect: This creates a cascading effect down the entire page hierarchy - disabling indexing on a top-level page will disable it for the entire section. This hierarchical behavior ensures consistent indexing policies across related content sections and prevents accidental exposure of content that should remain private within a section.

The Gitbook team shifted focus to creating a beautiful online editor that allows you to instantly deploy pages using the https://<username>.gitbook.io/<gitbook_name> pattern, which is great! I totally recommend this if you just want to deploy pages and make them available to public similar to sharing a public google doc.
