r/gitlab on Reddit: How can I have a private page of my gitbook on gitlab?
January 4, 2022 -

I have used gitbook template to create a gitbook on gitlab, everything is fine.

I can see the content on my desktop with local server by using command:

gitbook serve

And the page can be visited at http://localhost:4000

My question is:

How can I make the page be hosted on gitlab and only visited by myself or people granted by me? Is that possible? Cause github explicitly stated the repository have to be public to use the function of page. How about gitlab? Thanks.

New to self-hosted documentation. I have a question whether I can use Gitbook for non-open sourced projects?
I assumed Gitbook itself is not selfhostable? It is a SaaS application and the free tier model requires an open source project. The CLI is deprecated and they focus on the SaaS hosting now. Have a look at Bookstack, which is actively maintained and can be selfhosted for documentation. I have created a book using GitBook. I want only specific set of people to be able to read my book. These set of people should be able to access it by logging in somewhere or by any other method. How shall I achieve this? Even if the link is public, how shall I restrict the users who see it? (I don't want to add them in the collaborators list) ... So in your case, providing your book is private (private GitHub repo), an access key is a solution, but you cannot easily control the set of people using it; ie: you can only control the set you are giving the token to.
