GitHub Codespaces is the best way to code on an iPad that I've found so far.
I am self-hosting code-server project on VPS and using it as a PWA so it can run in "native-like" feel. Works great. More on reddit.com

My cs50 codespace is stuck at "setting up your codespace"
So all you need to do is just download VS code on your own computer and then go to github---->codespaces. Here there must be a codespace at the bottom of the screen with some random name, click on the three dots, click on open in ..., then select Visual Studio Code and it will automatically open vscode on your computer then you will have to agree to all the permissions and stuff, then it should work for you. If there was some problem in your codespace it will give the notification to update it and will rebuild it. it is although still not working on my browser but Now, I can at least work and complete the course:- These steps that u mentioned i did it before at recomended space i open my vs code still facing the same . If anybody have the perfectly working spets plz do mention bro!!! More on reddit.com

How do I enable Codespaces on GitHub?

Codespaces is on by default for developers with a GitHub free account. If you belong to an organization, there may be a policy that prevents cloning—but if you can clone a repository, you will be able to start using Codespaces. Organizations will also need to pay for, enable, and manage their Codespaces instances.

Is Codespaces available for individual developers?

Codespaces is available for developers in every organization, and under the control of the organization who pays for the user's codespace. All personal (individual) GitHub.com accounts include a quota of free usage each month, which organizations can enable (see the next question) for their private and internal repositories. GitHub will provide users in the free plan 120 core hours or 60 hours of run time on a 2 core codespace, plus 15 GB of storage each month. See how it's balanced on the billing page.

Using GitHub Codespaces on iPad - DEV Community
December 12, 2021 - Since Codespaces is a VM, it will bill for usage as per the terms on GitHub website. But, it has a nice feature that by default turns off your Codespace after 30 minutes of inactivity. This will truly get you a pay-as-you-go cloud-based coding environment. ... The GitHub environment feels very natural on the iPad Pro.

November 17, 2020 - I don't know why Apple doesn't fix coding on the iPad, but maybe they didn't even care as a better solution has been in the making. Browsers are becoming the new OS, you can do a lot in a browser, if you can play AAA games why wouldn't you be able to code? Codespaces and vscode.dev not loading · community · Discussion #63015
After I came back every time I tried opening my Codespaces on the web it always gives me a blank screen with either “setting up your web editor” or “setting up your Codespace” and never loading from there and staying static. This might be an issue regarding my device(an iPad) as I have been able to access my files on vscode on my phone which work just fine, however I had done nothing with my iPad for nearly a month so I am unsure as to why nothing is loading at all.

December 12, 2021 - But for now, I’ll just highlight how I’ve made more changes than I expected I could directly on the iPad (including marked-up screenshots using only iOS tools). The main tool that makes this whole workflow possible is Codespaces. If you’re curious about the files that drive Codespaces, you can view them in the actual repo. The .devcontainer directory contains the files which Github will detect and use to create or spin up a Codespace.
