I'm at a target and have a 2027 junior internship in credit investing for a clo manager. For sophomore year, I can go back to my freshman finance internship but kinda don't want to because I had to do 80 hrs/week to do 10 hrs of finance stuff.

Everyone I know already has their 2026 internship so I feel behind and I'm wondering if it's still possible to get a decent sophomore internship in finance (I like credit but would be fine with anything challenging like investing, distressed, rx, banking, strategy consulting, corp finance, etc...).

Do you have any advice for someone in my position? Who should I try reaching out to, what would you recommend applying to, and how should I go about this? The job market is pretty shit :(

I've just finish my sophomore year in CS and I'm really enjoying it, but I do not have an internship for this summer. I am trying to focus on become an embedded SWE or something in robotics. I have relevant projects (arduino, raspberry pi, stm 32) and I am involved on campus (CS club, robotics) and I work in two labs on campus (robotics, and a research one).

I have been able to get offers for interviews before for embedded roles, but various things happened that caused me to not get them. I am working hard outside of school to connect with people, learn more about this field and what I can do to become better in it. I am active on github, and I am always trying to learn.

I hope to target defense contractors and other areas that need embedded SWE interns. My resume is currently in Jakes format, and I have gotten reviews from career advisors and others. This past cycle I applied to nearly 100 jobs and got a few offers to interview. Now that I have some more experience under my belt with these research gigs, and I have all summer, what should I be doing to get better and create so I can land an internship?

I just got a new job a couple of months ago. I had an outdated skillset so I had to do most of these things: Build things. Think of something that would be fun to build. For me, at times it was just a program to solve a puzzle that was in a Professor Layton Video Game. The point of this is not to build something amazing, but to get practice working on an actual project and also to be able to show the project(s). Work on new skills. Take a course on a learning website that gives you some form of Certificate you can put on your LinkedIn profile. Recruiters seemed to love that. Also it gives you a chance to build something. Expand on that thing. Practice LeetCode, doing the problems listed on NeetCode.io so you have an explanation of how it's supposed to go. Don't grind it, just do a couple problems per day. Watch videos on how to answer interview questions. I liked the Don Georgevich videos. Very helpful for me. Every good interview question is something like "tell me about a time when you..." so you'll have to draw on your experiences from school (team projects) or your own projects. I learned a lot by repeating these videos, listening while driving. When you get an interview and the recruiter asks if you know something or the job description says you need to know something but you don't know that thing, look for YouTube videos on how to answer questions on that thing. For me it was OOP questions, C#, etc. More listening while driving, but sometimes these are also visual. Best of luck to you!

I was kind of in the same boat when I graduated back in 2018. It’s not ideal but it’s possible (at least back then). My path looked like: had a part time job at my university’s IT help desk while I was a student graduated with a CS degree in May applied to every entry level SWE job I could find that summer I got an IT help desk job at a large boring international company continued to apply to jobs while working and building “professional experience” eventually got a job offer a few months later at a software company in their “rotational program” rotated every 6 months through their QA, Engineering, and Customer Service department made a really good impression during my engineering stint, got hired into that department full time had no trouble getting other SWE roles after that It’s not fun or ideal, and it involves doing a lot of work you might not be excited about and quite a bit of luck, but it is possible. I’ve been at 4 companies total in my career, including that initial IT job. My salary progression from that IT job to now, 6 years later, went: 50k -> 70k -> 98k -> 110k -> 135k -> 175k -> 210k
