Commodus - Wikipedia
3 days ago - His solo reign saw less military conflict than that of Marcus Aurelius, but internal intrigues and conspiracies abounded, goading Commodus to an increasingly dictatorial style of leadership. This culminated in his creating a deific personality cult, including his performances as a gladiator in the Colosseum.
Discussions

In Gladiator, Commodus is so nervous to be named heir, because in the entirety of the Empire there had been only one other occasion in which a biological son succeeded his father.
For clarity, I meant the entirety of the empire up until Commodus. The succession was usually given to an adopted son worthy of the role, such as Maximus. More on reddit.com

Commodus in Gladiator is a tragic character

Maximus rejected the handshake.

It is generally a bad idea to swear loyalty to a man who murders his own father.

Just watched Gladiator and thought the plot twist towards the end was silly. Anyone remember?

So this post is 8 years old, so sorry for reviving this.

I also find it very strange how Lucius knows about the plot, glad someone pointed it out as lazy writing, I was scratching my head out and think I missed some details in and between.

Commodus from Gladiator is one of the greatest antagonists I have ever seen on film.
Hmm, I disagree. I thought he was an awful antagonist but performed extraordinarily well by Joaquin Phoenix. Gladiator is a movie I loved the first time and hated the second and every other time. The reason for that, I think, is that the script and screenplay is just awful; once you look at anything with even the smallest bit of scrutiny, it falls apart. Rome is a hilariously 2 dimensional city, the people are constantly talked about but are basically binary background noise and the morality at play is so black and white and the virtuous are so virtuous and the evil are so evil and it all comes across as a high-budget, day-time soap opera; it's a very shallow, cheesy, unsubtle, silly movie that pretends to be deep but is actually very shallow and loaded with inaccuracies, errors, plot holes, deus ex machina's and plot holes. That said, the performances and talent involved elevate it more than any other bad movie I've ever seen. All the actors, the soundtrack, the cinematography, the set design and stunt work and action scenes, everyone brought their A game, including Scott. Crowe and Phoenix, in particular, bring this movie to life, despite the cheesy dialogue they're forced to work with. So much so that the movie has an illusion of depth and this great epic sweep. For that alone, I think Gladiator is worthy of praise; despite its silly script, flat characters and ridiculous plot conveniences, they still managed to make something impressive. For a while anyway. Not saying you're wrong OP, but that's just how I see it :) More on reddit.com

r/Gladiator on Reddit: Unpopular Opinion: Commodus Was a Victim of Circumstance
October 22, 2024 -
Commodus from Gladiator is often viewed as one of cinema’s most detestable villains, yet beneath his heinous actions lies a tragic character shaped by his upbringing and circumstances. His intense jealousy toward Maximus is palpable throughout the film; he constantly witnesses Maximus being favored by his father, Marcus Aurelius, leading to a deep sense of insecurity that manifests in hostility. This jealousy drives Commodus to commit patricide, asphyxiating his father in a desperate bid for approval and power. The act not only signifies his moral decline but also reflects the profound emotional neglect he experienced, leading him to believe that love and validation could only be attained through domination. Throughout his reign, Commodus resorts to violence, orchestrating gladiatorial games that revel in bloodshed, which highlights his detachment from human life. This ruthlessness can be traced back to his upbringing, where he was deprived of genuine emotional connections and taught that power is paramount. His incestuous feelings for Lucilla further reveal his warped understanding of love, showing that his only intimate bond is mired in manipulation and control. His emotional breakdowns, marked by whining and complaints, underscore the fragility behind his tyrannical façade; he is not just a monster but a deeply insecure individual seeking approval in all the wrong ways. When he cheats to defeat Maximus in their final confrontation, it encapsulates his desperation and moral bankruptcy, and yet even this cowardice fails to secure his victory. While Commodus undeniably embodies the traits of a horrible human being, committing atrocious acts that warrant condemnation, it is crucial to recognize that his actions are not justifiable but can be understood as the tragic outcomes of a toxic childhood and the relentless pursuit of a father’s approval. Commodus is a reflection of how emotional neglect and familial betrayal can warp one’s perception of love and power, making him not just a villain but also a victim of circumstance—trapped in a cycle of violence and despair that he never learned how to escape.

So, overall—I’m saying that Commodus is more so a victim of circumstance since he grew up without being raised entirely properly by Marcus. Had his father perhaps paid a little more attention to him and raised him differently, taking more time to perhaps manifest a more authentic bond, Commodus could’ve developed to be more stable. Of course he still would’ve faced some mental challenges, as it’s just that all this childhood neglect additional to those pre-existing issues didn’t end well, but I feel as though there was indeed opportunity in there for him to pull through a little better. Being unable to form genuine bonds with people distorted his worldview, also, probably confusing his feelings and making him think that he liked his sister, which he must’ve on some level, but those feelings weren’t born of healthy roots, again traceable back to his beginnings, isolated from genuine friendships and pressured by the burdens of royal life, leading to his sister, Lucilla, being one of the few truly there for him.

Well, that’s all from the top of my head right now. If you have any further questions for my extreme opinion, I’d be more than happy to answer!—also keep in mind that I DO NOT support his actions in any way, shape, or form. None of them are justifiable, and he had his death coming, but all I’m trying to say here is that it’s possible to explain some of his actions, and to sympathize with him on some level.

I have definitely thought about this before, and I think it's so true. Commodus is a complete villain, but villains are born of painful and traumatizing events and circumstances. A tragic part about Marcus Aurelius' death scene in "Gladiator" is that he didn't try to save himself. He could've possibly lived if he had chosen the right words when Commodus gave his little speech. Like, "I'm sorry I've made you feel this way," or perhaps, "I love you, son,"! Incestuous feelings are obviously messed up, but in a twisted way, I understand having feelings for probably the only woman who's ever shown him respect and care. He probably felt that he could be himself around Lucilla and that she liked him just the way he was. But usually, that just comes with being a sibling. And who was Lucilla in love with? Maximus, the guy that Commodus had been jealous of his whole life, basically. I feel as if having a mother around could've changed his upbringing, too. If Marcus didn't show love to his son, hopefully his wife would have. A loving relationship with both parents is very important for children's healthy upbringing.

I kind of wonder how much of his father and sister shying away from Commodus was that they sensed that there was something wrong or a bit twisted or evil about him in the first place. Their emotional distance, of course, emphasized the issue but saying that he was a good person that became bad because he was neglected might be putting the cart before the horse.

The True History of Commodus, the Mad Emperor of Ancient Rome | HowStuffWorks
June 28, 2023 - Strauss says that Commodus called himself the "Roman Hercules" and even dressed the part in a full lion's skin and club, as shown in this rare surviving sculpture of Commodus from the second century. In one particularly twisted gladiatorial bout, Commodus wanted to reenact the story of Hercules defeating the giants, so he gathered all of the men of Rome who had lost their feet to disease or accident, "and then, after fastening about their knees some likenesses of serpents' bodies, and giving them sponges to throw instead of stones, had killed them with blows of a club, pretending that they were giants," writes Cassius Dio.

The Story Of Mad Roman Emperor Commodus Was More Outrageous Than 'Gladiator' Could Depict
May 6, 2025 - Under Commodus, Rome had descended “from a kingdom of gold to one of iron and rust.” Much like Nero had supposedly fiddled while Rome burned, Commodus enjoyed himself as the city decayed around him. The executions of the senators had whet his appetite for blood and he devoted himself “to combats of wild beasts and of men.” Not merely content to hunt in private, the emperor began to perform in the Colosseum itself, competing as a gladiator to the delight of the crowds and horror of the senate, as depicted in Gladiator.
