Porcelain vs Ceramic tile in the shower?
Porcelain is ceramic. What you want to avoid is porous tiles. Most glazed tiles are suitable for wet areas. More glossy is slippery but that can happen with porcelain, also. Standard wall tile is a bisque body -porous- but is glazed before firing so fine for wet areas. Modern tile bodies are less porous probably, but unless you’re installing outside, no worries. Proper porcelain -and there is improper porcelain- is very low porosity. The body material is fired at a very high heat so it fuses into a glass like state, so suitable for exterior use. There are a number of attractive properties to porcelain; glazed or unglazed, cleft or rough face, matte face, or glossy like marble. It’s also as tough a nails, as in being less vulnerable to scratching. But lower fired, glazed products can look great, too. And unglazed quarry tile has its applications. The original Saltillo tile was one of my fave looks. More on reddit.com

Should I buy glazed or unglazed tile?
Glazed tile has a smooth finish that is easier to clean. Unglazed has a porous surface that will stain easier so will need more regular applications of sealant to prevent it. The 'dirty film' likely had much more to do with your soap choice and/or water quality than the tiles themselves. Both tiles will still get dirty. Glazed will be easier to get clean again. Cons of polished porcelain
Cons: Very slippery on floors when wet or feet /shoes are wet. Some might say "easy to clean". HOWEVER, you will literally see every streak and footprint. If you have OCD this is not for you. Any scratches or chips will be very noticeable. Reflects natural and synthetic light differently, sometimes can be blinding. I always recommend polish on walls (showers washrooms etc) And same tile but matte on the floors What I always tell people is take samples home, lay on floor and leave there for a couple days, the flooring changes at different times of day pending natural light coming in through windows, when the sun is set etc. Side tip: do not go with white grout, off white or grey is the way to go. The grout will eventually discolor. If you go white make sure grout is sealed after install (some people mix sealer in grout mix, pros and cons to this) Good luck! More on reddit.com

Porcelain tile has the same color throughout the material. A broken or chipped piece of unglazed porcelain will have a uniform color throughout its thickness. Ceramic tile often has a glazed surface coloring, so chips may reveal a different color underneath.

r/HomeImprovement on Reddit: Cleaner ruined glazed porcelain tiles.
October 19, 2019 -

When our builder installed the glazed porcelain tile, they failed to remove all of the grout haze, then proceeded to seal the grout by spreading an acrylic sealer all over the tile and let it dry. We’ve had two separate crews come in (at builder expense) to remove the mess, but now it’s worse than before. Specifically, one of the crews used a product called Formula 51, and they applied it full strength, undiluted. The result is what looks like dirty Coke spills and drops etched into the tile throughout the home. The second crew was unable to get these stains out, and the manufacturer had no suggestions.

I’m hoping someone might know of a product that will somehow polish these stains out without destroying the glazed finish, otherwise we’re forcing the builder to rip everything out and install new.

How To Clean, Seal and Maintain Porcelain Tiles - Sealers Plus
April 4, 2024 - Generally, when these tiles start to get dirty, the first comment is “I’ll seal my tiles and this will make cleaning easier”. Glazed porcelain and ceramic tiles are not porous so there will be no benefit from sealing the tile. Sealing a non-porous tile will create a bigger problem as the sealer that can’t be absorbed into the tile will then leave a residue and this will start to “grab” more dirt and grime quicker than before.

November 14, 2014 - Now I know the differences are there, I can tell which ones have more glaze by the feel of them, but it is quite a subtle difference. I have tried a kitchen cleaner with bleach, and that works but it seems rather aggressive for a kitchen floor, and I'm not sure if it is wise. Help please! ... Hi Paul , I would suggest a test with our intensive cleaner for porcelain ( other specific deeper alkali cleaners available) , these textured tiles can be tricky to maintain, I would try a test 2-4 tiles at 1-3 dilution with scrubbing brush/ white pad, deck brush( stiff) let your product work 5-10 min scrub every 1-2 min.

Yet More Porcelain Tile Problems! - The Tile and Stone Blog
April 21, 2014 - It definitely sounds like the back grid pattern has been imprinted on the (or perhaps more accurately, into) the face/glaze of the tiles stacked beneath it. It can be the engobe kiln-relase that gets onto the face of the lower tiles in the box but that can sometimes be removed; it depends if it has just been left on the surface or become embedded into it. However it is usally a visible, white pattern. I am not 100% certain of the process but with speed of production being all important these days (time is money) modern factory techniques can produce a porcelain tile – from clay dust, to boxed tiles, in a matter of an hour or so (not long ago making tiles took literally weeks).

March 17, 2023 - Grinding marks are another thing that can make porcelain tiles look bad, especially if they have a glossy or polished finish. The grinding process used to smooth the surface left these marks, which may be easier to see in certain lighting conditions. By using the right techniques for installation and finishing, you can reduce the number of grinding marks and make sure everything looks the same. Lippage is the term for uneven tile edges that make a step between two tiles. This problem can be caused by an uneven subfloor, bad installation methods, or tiles that are not the same size.
