I have often needed to change phones and phone numbers, for whatever reason. I unfortunately cannot always control that. The fact that I can't get into my own Gmail account makes this an incredible strain on my life.
I have 2-step verification turned off. I don't want to have a security feature that locks me out of my own account even though I know my password. I want to be able to just sign into my Gmail on any device by just typing in the username and password. The security feature of having to verify on another device, or having to text verifications or whatever is not worth it to me.
I have lost access to so much important stuff in the past. How do I set up my current Gmail account, that I currently have access to, in such a way that it allows me to sign in with my password on any other device without without a phone number without some extra verification?

I'm trying to access an old account - I've given it my phone number to send the code, when i type in the code it tells me that someone else must be trying to sign into my account so I'm not able to sign in, so i should try a different device... I've actually dug up my old computer now, but when I try to sign on with that it tells me that I'VE ENTERED THE WRONG PASSWORD... IT'S THE RIGHT PASSWORD. I know it's the right password because on my phone it takes me past the password page and onto the phone number page. But on my computer it acts like it's the wrong password. How the hell is this security? I'd rather have no password and let anyone in the world be able to sign into my email with just the username than to have this nonsense. I trusted a bunch of important information and documents in the hands of Google so that they do this?

You don't need to do anything special. 2FA is not compulsory on Gmail, although it's strongly recommended. Have you activated it ? This is not done by default. Unless you set it up, you don't have 2FA. Just go into the security section of your account, and check. It seems you're mixing up two things : users who have activated 2FA, and who then, having lost their phone or through some other mishap, are locked out of their account ; and users who, regardless of whether they have activated 2FA, are required, at some point, to give some extra identification in order to log into their account, because Gmail thinks it might be a hacker trying to get in. In this case, it's crucial that one has registered a recovery email address and recovery phone beforehand, and possibly saved Gmail's recovery codes. There are many posts by users in the second category on r/Gmail . The problem is, Gmail putting up such hurdles cannot be predicted. It's decided by algorithm, looks random, and the identifiers you're asked for may vary. In fact, some users here say that in order to avoid being locked out in the second case, it's better to have activated 2FA, because then, Gmail will consider it less likely that it's a hacker who's trying to get access. (I don't have myself knowledge of the subject.) If you want to totally avoid this risk, you must create a paid Gmail account, or a paid account at another provider. Free accounts always run the risk of being blocked, and then there's often no human customer support (free Gmail accounts certainly don't come with it). Gmail is a well-known culprit in this matter : there are many reports of its alogrithms being very sensitive in this regard. But Tuta, to mention another provider, may also suspend your account if it thinks you're a spammer ; false positives occur regularly. You can appeal to a human being at Tuta. Gmail is automated.
