I am setting up gsuite and gmail for our mac based team.

When trying to update server settings for an existing imap mail account in the apple mail client on desktop I am getting a "unable to verify account name or password" despite the user name and password credentials being correct and the server settings being seemingly correct.

server settings i am using:

ingoing mail: imap.gmail.com

port 993

password auth with tls/ssl

outgoing mail server

smtp.gmail.com

port 465 use tls/ssl and password auth

IIRC, you’ll have to set up an ‘app specific password’ in Gmail, because they view IMAP and POP as insecure protocols.

You’ll have to set up 2 step authentication and then create an app password. Or better yet, add it as a google account and use oauth without an app password.
