I set up a gmail account years ago, using a phone number. I no longer have that phone number.
I tried signing into that gmail account (I remember the password) but it told me that I needed to confirm a code that was sent to the phone number used to set it up.
Now Gmail will not let me sign in.
What do I do now? Does google seriously expect people to retain all their phone numbers for the rest of their lives? These rules are RIDICULOUS.

If you don't have the phone number or another recovery email address, you can't access the account. The rules aren't ridiculous. It was your own responsibility to update your phone number and your Google security settings before you got rid of the phone number. You could contact whoever has the number now and see if they are willing to give you the code.

I am literally experiencing the same issue right now 🥲. I know the password but the number is from a different phone. I am waiting to get to the screen that asks questions or something but haven’t gotten there yet

My mom got her phone formatted and it's the only device where her account is signed in. Unfortunately, she forgot her password and I tried to recover it, there's two authentication process where I must put the phone number first and wait for the verification code to receive on the same account she lost, it really doesn't make any sense to me about how we must use the lost email to receive the verification code to access it! Is there any way that I can do?

Google probably believes you still have access to the account somewhere (like the phone where you received the verification code)… * Still signed in on some computer or mobile device * Have an e-mail client or app connected to the account * Have forwarding setup to another account * Have another account using POP3 to fetch messages. Check around and see if you have a way of accessing the verification code sent to the account. If you still can’t find a way to access the e-mail sent to the account, then try letting the account sit for a full week with NO sign in or account recovery attempts. Just leave it idle for a week. This may allow you to attempt account recovery with different questions being asked. The only account recovery option Google provides starts at https://accounts.google.com/signin/recovery Google does not provide live support for account recovery, you must use the above link.

If you can't find your codes, you can search your computer for: Backup-codes-username.txt with your username. For example, if your username is google123, search for: Backup-codes-google123.txt.
