Being a BOLD intern is my dream and I will be applying in the next few weeks and have been speaking with former Bold interns about their experiences as well.
Obviously I want to have the best chance resume and along with reading a billion articles on formatting my resume, I also checked google's for applying. Most articles I've read said to leave off your gpa if not stellar, and that most companies will put experience high above gpa as far as looking for people.
Google said on their website specifically to add it (your gpa). However, it did not say current, major specific, or cumulative. I'll be honest, my cumulative gpa is terrible (2.0). I had a bad depressive year my last year there and it wrecked my cumulative. However, I'm doing very well currently and my major gpa is good. Which should I/do I have to add?
Or am I completely doomed? My experience is really great, but I definitely feel a bit like I have no chance because of my cumulative. (Though all these connections I'm making and experience will help a lot).
Help?
I’ve analysed literally 100s of Google job Interviews and candidate feedback assessments over the last few years. Here’s the top points which are critical to remember when applying, or at the interview stage at Google:
What Google Looks for In New Employees
By most account, Google receives between 2.5 and 3.5 million job applications a year, and receives as many as 50,000 applications a week. Yet the company only hires about 4,000 people a year across its 40 offices – roughly about 330 people a month. However, knowing the following can boost your chances of success and give you the edge. The top 4 attributes Google look for are:
-
Smartness (Cognitive Ability/Technical Skills)
This can be divided into ‘Cognitive Ability’ and ‘Technical Skills’. Google famously does not consider your GPA or University grades as important nor your IQ. What is key here is your ability to pull differing parts of information together to form a unique solution. The ability to come up with a contrarian perspective from analysing information and deciphering different meanings from it. This will certainly be tested in the Phone Interview sometimes via a Google Document where you are required to show your workings to the scenario put across. The In-person interview will also require this to be demonstrated sometimes via a whiteboard. These questions will mainly be requiring analytical answers rather than descriptive. One of the most commonly asked questions is: ‘What is your favorite Google product and how would you improve it?’.
At least 100 more questions and answers have been collated here: http://www.googleycareers.com/
If you are applying for a technical role, then most of the phone/in-person interview will involve math, computing and coding skills. A recent example of a technical question asked of a software development engineer candidate was: ‘A string consists of ‘0’, ‘1’ and ‘?’. The question mark can be either ‘0’ or ‘1’. Find all possible combinations for a string.’
2) Creativity
This an extension of the first criterion but usually requires you to demonstrate your knowledge or experience but in a unique setting. This is testing not just your previous knowledge, but also the experience you would cited on your resume or the online Google application form.
A good example of a question that Google interviewers have used in recent years to test creativity is: ‘How would you explain the importance of HTML 5 to Larry Page and then to my grandma?’ In both cases, you will be dealing with the same set of information – that is, HTML 5 – but it will require some creativity to convincingly express that information in two different ways.
3) Drive for Excellence / Leadership Qualities
This is based on tenacity. One of the most common feedback points is that candidates find they are pushed to come up with a variety of alternative solutions to problem questions and live challenges. For example, if you think one answer is the best solution, then be prepared to rationalise why it is a better option that the alternatives. Be prepared for the interviewer to tweak and change the variables to test your limits here. The secret is that they are looking for ‘tenacity’ - demonstration that you will keep on questioning and reasoning for the optimal solution.
Leadership qualities are not based on traditional leadership qualities at Google. They are interested in “Emergent Leadership” instead. This includes a focus on willingness to solve problems, a strong sense of intellectual humility when working in a team, and a strong sense of ownership of projects. The “emergent leadership” qualities they look for have been deciphered in more detail in Chapter 4 of “How to Get a Job at Google”: www.googleycareers.com
4) Alignment with Google Culture / Googleyness
Having Googleyness is the mysterious sauce to impressing the interviewer. While it’s difficult to describe, we have cracked the code as far as possible. The main reason for the confusion is that there are too many attributes given to the phrase ‘being Googley’ and no one definition. Current and former Google employees have listed the following attributes as part of being Googley:
• Valuing users and colleagues Rewarding great performance • Being humble, and letting go of the ego • Being transparent, honest, and fair
Also remember that personality is something that can be gauged by how you answer any question, not just those relating to Googleyness. Keen and friendly listening, concise answers, good poise and a confident, friendly demeanor will all help you project Googleyness. A chapter has been dedicated to “achieving Googleyness” here: http://www.googleycareers.com/
Recruitment Process
Worth noting that there is an internal and external interview process and it is crucial to navigate this process in the right way: The external process is:
Application Form Recruiter Screen (initial sift through applications) Phone Interview(s) On Site Interview(s)
Internally the decision goes through: Hiring Committee Executive Review Compensation Committee Offer!
I'd personality recommend listing your major GPA and labeling it clearly. Resumes are kind of already a game of highlighting your strengths while burying your weaknesses.
What is the salary for a BOLD Intern at Google per hour?
What is the salary for a BOLD Intern at Google per month?
Which Google locations have the highest salary satisfaction for BOLD Intern professionals?

Any idea when we should expect to start hearing back?
This is for mainly for people with prior experience with google bold or other google internships.
I’m pretty sure they review on a rolling basis. I applied on day 2 of it opening.
How long was it until you hear back about moving forward with the questionnaire/interviews?
Thank you in advanced :))

Hi I accepted my Google bold offer a couple weeks ago. If there is anyone that wants to connect to talk about our locations and things lmk. I also received 7 other internship offers for anyone that needs tips on applying and interviewing!
Hey guys!
I was wondering if anyone on here was able to land the Google Bold Internship? I have been doing some research and it does seem interesting considering I do not come from a CS or technical background but rather a communication, legal, and marketing background. I do have considerable experience since I've been working for a long time but just graduated college with a 3.85 and am Vice President of my sorority. Not sure if ANY of this is relevant, but I just wanted to know what the process looks like from people who have applied/gotten the internship.
Thanks :)
Hi everyone! I’m wondering if anybody’s heard back from Google about their BOLD internship for next year. I know applications closed a couple weeks ago and I was wondering if anyone might have heard back from them. Interview? Rejection? Anything. TIA guys!
Has anyone gone through this program? I'm currently a sophomore at DePaul University in Chicago so I'm aiming for Summer 2019. What kind of things can I do to help my case? Here are my strongest points:
-Currently, I'm in a Carrier Sales internship at a smaller 3rd Party Logistics company (pretty much account management) in Chicago, and I also got into the C.H. Robinson Sophomore Exploration program.
-I have a pretty high amount of unique community service and have taken a few rigorous sales classes with a lot of real world application.
- I'm a student ambassador for the Sales Program at DePaul (largest in the country)
-My mentor (brother-in-law) also co-founded an Alphabet company in New York and has offered to write a letter of recommendation from me.
Here are some weaknesses
- My major GPA is 3.8, but my overall is 3.1. Further, I had to withdraw from a class on Buddhism this quarter to prevent my GPA from dipping below 3.0.
- I got a C in Calculus II and a D in Statistics, but DePaul allows us to retake classes over the summer to replace grades.
Have they opened applications already and are you diversity?
I just got an interview for a 2019 sales internship for Google Bold. My GPA is a 3.21. I do have lots of sales experience as well am a d1 athlete, but you are worth way more than your GPA. Work experience is most important. You got this! Good luck to all
Or if anyone has had experience with this internship, what is the typical timeline?
I got a email saying that I got into the program, but I just realized I don't know a whole lot about the program.
Is this the type of program that accepts everyone, and is the program worth the time commitment?
What are the benefits of the program, and can anyone that previously attended speak about it?
I know that it kind of "feeds" into the immersion internship, but how concrete is this pipeline and do they accept everyone.
Hello, I applied for the BOLD internship on October 3rd, but I haven’t received the questionnaire yet. I also wanted to discuss topics related to the BOLD internship. Will there be a megathread? If possible, can someone share the link?
Applied for Bold back in October and still haven’t received any response. I never got a candidate form but my application still says ‘submitted’. What does this mean? Am I going to get rejected soon?
