Works better for specific websites, much better extension support, and the themes are better as you can actually change the colour of the toolbar. Also profiles. Safari doesn’t have profiles, but Chrome has excellent support for profiles, meaning you can have separate bookmarks, themes, extensions, and settings for work, school or personal without having 2 whole computer users just for work and personal. I’m a web developer and I always have a testing profile alongside my personal and work profiles. You could even add 50 profiles and everything can still be separate. Or on a shared computer, you can have a profile for each child if you’re a parent like I am. Not to mention that if you’re on the latest macOS, you have to update the whole system to update Safari. Chrome just requires a browser restart to update Chrome, and it’s quicker. Answer from CrazyMan_866 on reddit.com

Is it just me, or does Chrome seem more optimized for macOS than Safari these days? Safari feels heavier and laggier with each new update. I'm seriously considering switching to Chrome. Anyone else notice this?

I know there may be people using others than the above mentioned, but wanted to know out of safari and chrome what is better? I’ve been using safari since I got my MacBook but it’s honestly not that good because sometimes when I open a new tab and try to search something it just won’t search and I’ll have to close the safari app. Chrome has been great but I heard safari uses a lot less memory?

Edit: wow thanks for all the responses. I should just stick with safari for now then since you all recommend it more than chrome. I think I need to update to Ventura to remove the bugs I experience at times.

Thanks all

The animosity towards Chrome is two things… edit- three things! Google abandoned their do no evil mantra, and will collect and sell as much info as they can. So bad choice if you value privacy. They’re currently in court for tracking people who thought they were browsing privately in incognito mode. Resource hog bogging down your device. Although more recently versions are much improved. Google is a monolith, so better to support smaller and more innovative teams behind smaller web browsers. Google itself doesn’t create anything of value, they just buy up an absorb the competition and add new features that way. All that said, I still use it.

Chrome is made by Google and it is their core business to spy on you, even though they say they care about privacy, They are the last to get rid of third party cookies, and their latest “privacy sandbox” system is not private at all. If you do not care about privacy, chrome is a resource hog, meaning it uses way more processor power, disk space and energy than other browsers making your computer slow and draining laptop batteries. (Which is why Apple won’t allow it on iOS. (unless you are in the EU then this year you can experience instant battery drain as soon as Google releases the real Chrome for iOS)). All this while you have Safari as a default on your system, which is optimised for macOS in each and every way, and has way better privacy features that actually offer privacy. The whole “but a lot of websites do not work in Safari” claim stems from about a hundred years ago when all websites used Flash (another resource hog) and Apple refused to support it. Nowadays that is no longer an argument.

r/macbookpro on Reddit: Macbook Pro SUCKS for Google Chrome and so much more!
January 13, 2024 -

I don't know how many people agree but time and over I feel Macbooks are intentionally designed to make products suck which are not of their own. And to the top of their list is Google Chrome!

In my windows I used to open so many tabs in multiple window and it didn't lag but I think Chrome on Macbook cannot function as seamlessly as on Windows. Chrome always lags here.
I have so many complains from multi-tasking to file organization now that my basic feature of web browsing cannot work well.
Anyone faces this issue?

PS: I have Late 2021 Macbook Pro 16 GB RAM and 1 TB Memory (5 month old)

r/mac on Reddit: I have returned to using Google Chrome as my default browser for my Mac.
October 18, 2025 -

I’m back to Google Chrome after testing almost every browser for my MacBook Air M2 (8/256 base model).

About three months ago, I deleted Chrome from my Mac without ever really testing its memory usage or battery performance. I had seen a lot of Reddit posts claiming Chrome eats a ton of RAM, CPU, and battery, so I decided to uninstall it and switch to Safari.

At first, Safari seemed fine — clean and smooth. But then I noticed that whenever I opened 5–6 tabs, my Mac started heating up a lot. I initially thought it was because of the hot environment, but even when the temperature was cool, my Mac would still get warm while using simple sites like Facebook, Gmail, LinkedIn, and YouTube. I restarted a few times, but the issue stayed.

Next, I switched to Firefox. It performed decently, but I found its UI hard to get used to, and I couldn’t find a proper memory-saver option. So I deleted it and went on to try Arc, Zen, SigmaOS, Vivaldi, Orion, and Brave. Unfortunately, none of them gave me a satisfying experience.

My last option was Microsoft Edge — the same browser we used to download Chrome back in the Windows days. But this time, Edge really surprised me. It used less RAM, gave noticeably better battery life, and kept my Mac cool even with 10–11 heavy tabs open. I used it for quite a while.

However, after the Tahoe update, Edge started getting buggy — I couldn’t pin tabs or open new ones properly, and the glitches piled up. I waited for an update, but nothing came. So yesterday I thought, “Wait, I never really tested Chrome properly before uninstalling it. Let’s give it another shot. If it’s bad, I’ll go back to Edge.”

I downloaded Chrome again, went straight into the performance settings, turned on memory saving, and disabled tab preloading. And to my surprise — Chrome worked great.

The same YouTube video that used around 1 GB of RAM on Edge or Safari only used about 777 MB on Chrome, with the same quality. Not just YouTube — other sites also ran lighter. Chrome was using less RAM overall, probably because I optimized the settings for performance.

So to those who think Chrome is a battery and memory hog — try tweaking the performance settings before judging. It might surprise you.

I’m not an expert, just a regular user sharing my experience — hopefully it helps someone struggling to find the right browser for their Mac.

Tldr: what browser should I use?

Story: so basically I always used google chrome. But I would see my laptop feeling a little bit slower, may be just me. I recently got the new m1 air and I’ve been using microsoft edge for the time being. My laptop seems to feel “buggier” and slower but it may just be a placebo. I was wondering if you guys know what browser I should use as google chrome is so much more convenient and efficient but idk, it feels unoptimised for performance, as if it uses up all my ram

I'm going into college soon and after years of using a Chromebook I got my first Mac. I wanted to download Chrome simply because it's more organized for me and I can navigate it easier than Safari sometimes. But I keep seeing stuff about how Chrome slows the Mac down and drains the battery. Is this true, or should I just stick to Safari?
