I got an email from Coursera offering 90% off a couple of cybersecurity courses in the Google Cybersecurity Certificate (https://www.coursera.org/professional-certificates/google-cybersecurity) as financial aid.
Does this discount only apply to the individual courses mentioned, or can I use it for the entire Google Cybersecurity certificate? Anyone know how these discounts usually work? Because the entire course is $49 per month so it's not much of a financial aid if i have to pay 4.9*8= $39.2 (there are 8 courses in it) : /

The course is relatively new. I got an email about coursera launching the course while studying for the CCNA, and I thought what the heck, might as well work on this course too and get a nice discount for Security+.
So from what I understood, you complete the entire Google Cybersecurity Certification program and you earn a discount voucher (or something similar) that saves you 30% for if/when you take the Security+ exam.
These exam prices are outrageous for where I live (3rd World country in Southeast Asia) so I've basically been relying on auditing courses, applying for financial aid, and just waiting for some nice discounts to come up...
I thought this update might be useful for others in my situation wanting to save $$ while transitioning to cybersecurity.

The Google course isn't included, I just had people confirm that The American Dream Academy only has the IBM Cybersecurity Certification and a few other certification programs from popular vendors/institutions that are completely free.
I'll leave the link to the program here for US residents, hoping it still helps some people out.

I didn't see about the 30% but Google seems to be teaching a self-paced, online, course which helps get the Sec+ in 3-6 months. https://grow.google/certificates/cybersecurity/#?modal_active=none At $49/month, seems a little slow. $300 ish dollars for the course looks cheap, but other tools might be more effective. Their self-paced sounds like online materials only. There might not be a lot of teaching. However, paired with Udemy and you might have a good source of knowledge

As such, Coursera Plus seems to make far more sense if you intend on completing any additional courses whatsoever, otherwise you’ll end up with overlapping $49/month subscriptions! You also get a 7-day free trial with Coursera Plus, and can also apply for financial aid, although I’m not sure how that process works.

No, it has no real respect within the field. I believe it is free or cheap so there is no harm, but I think your energy is better invested elsewhere. I would suggest before you even look at Cybersecurity you study and understand foundational computing, network and other knowledge. The competition for cyber jobs is sky high and there is an over saturation of people looking to get into the industry. Someone without any knowledge or experience in an IT environment has basically zero chance of ever landing a job in cyber.

I completed a Meta certificate on Coursera a couple months ago and they had the same thing, a job board available for students who completed the cert. I found that their job board had many jobs that weren’t available on other job websites that I searched through so I’m sure that the Google job board will be similar.

Anyone who's reading this thread asking questions, this cert is essentially the equivalent of the Security+ (without the actual cert. I'd recommend getting the actual cert after since you likely know the material anyways). Take that as you will for how valuable Sec+ is for a career, there is PLENTY of that information here and the rest of online.

Cue someone to step in here and explain how you can get it for free and have it lead to a solution that ends up compromising your system. A good rule to learn in cybersecurity is that anything of value that is offered for free is compromised. Unless you are getting it directly from Google (through a discount or a student program) you are literally doing the very thing that causes so many of the posts here. Engage with google directly, don't go around them.
