Is there any way I can enable Google Docs offline editing on Firefox? This is something pretty non-negotiable for me.
EDIT: Also, in Chrome if I highlight a word there's an option at the top, "Look Up [word]". Is there a way to enable this?
Firefox and Google Docs
I've found the solution to using Google Docs on Firefox
Is there an extension to be able to edit Google Docs offline?
Can someone confirm if Google intends to make offline editing available on other browsers? - Google Docs Editors Community
Some things about Edge are starting to annoy me, so I'm dipping into Firefox again. One issue with Firefox that I have never been able to fix is with Google Docs. The copy/paste menu does not work. When I try, I get the attached message.
Using the keyboard is not always an option, especially when copy/pasting images.
Are there any extensions to address this? Chromium has the "Google Docs Offline" extension that addressed it in Edge.
A lot of people (myself included) have experienced issues when trying to use Google Docs with Firefox. The main problem is that Google Docs requires the installation of the Google Docs Offline extention - which is only available on Chromium browsers.
So how does one get around this? Well, I've discovered that the PWAs for Firefox extension was actually the solution all along:
-
Download the Progressive Web Apps for Firefox extention: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/pwas-for-firefox/
-
Follow the set-up instructions
-
Go to Google Docs and use the PWAs for Firefox extension to install the site as a web app
-
Open the newly installed web app by finding it in Windows Search
-
Log in to your Google Account again (since the PWA instance uses a separate browser profile)
And that's it! From my experience, this seems to do the trick. It even allows me to use cut, copy, & paste with Google Docs without issue.
So why does this work? I believe it's because PWAs have the ability to download and access offline data (which is more advanced than normal cookies). Hence, this eliminates the need for an offline extention.
Just remember to open the PWA instead of the normal browser instance every time you wish to use Google Docs. There will also be an option in this instance's browser settings to use a tabbed design if you need to edit multiple documents at once. The PWA instance also uses a separate browser profile, so you'll need to log in to your Firefox account again if you want to sync passwords (but don't turn on extension sync, as any extensions that modify the start page could break the behavior of new tabs)
Also, make sure not to install the Agent Switcher, Privacy Badger, or Don't Track Me Google extensions on the PWA instance
My wifi's been seriously on the fritz lately, and it's right around the time I get the motivation to write a lot. I do not wanna switch back to Chrome, so basically I'm just wondering if there's an addon to be able to edit Google Docs offline.
I really love the new Firefox, recently switched from chrome.
But there is a feature I'm missing and I'm not sure if it exists or not. Some articles say it's available, others are outdated, and I wasn't able to do it. Can I access my google drive files offline?
This is very important in order to make sure an animation-full Slides is available when you need to present, for example.
I know it's Google and all, but that's the best office package as it allows for crucial collaborative editing!
Any light on the issue?
