February 10, 2020 - As we mentioned previously, Google Drive has a dedicated PWA, but not all Google products have one yet. So, if you try to open a Docs, Sheets, or Slides file, the Chrome browser will open a new tab so you can view your file.

January 22, 2020 - On Chromebooks and desktop, this PWA basically gives you a shortcut directly to Google Drive in its own window — no address bar, tabs, or anything else in the way. It's meant to look like a native experience, even though it's basically just Drive in Chrome, like you're used to. Opening items in Drive pushes you to a new, separate browser tab in another window if it requires an editor, so you don't get to do everything from inside the PWA. Opening a text document via Google Docs on a Chromebook in the Drive PWA, for example, takes you from the PWA to a new tab in Chrome, though you can preview items like PDFs and videos through the PWA.

At the moment other applications like Google Docs and Sheets are still only available as web applications and will only be editable through a web browser. Hopefully Google gets those applications running as PWAs in the near future so that there can be a seamless user experience when working within Google Drive and editing material within PWAs.

May 12, 2020 - Unfortunately, this isn’t a complete experience yet. Apps like Docs and Sheets within Drive still open up those editors in your browser. Eventually, Google will probably get these services to the point of working completely in PWAs, but it’s not time just yet.

July 23, 2024 - Well, I have tried Firefox and the Chrome browser and neither of those plus the two I mentioned above will allow editing of a Google Docs document within the browser unless I install the Google Docs app.

I would like to create PWA that acts as a standalone app in osx for individual docs (like notes, financial statements etc). But Google PWA redirects the PWAs to the landing page for google docs or google sheets, and there doesn't appear to be a way to achieve this.

It supports the Google Play Store, Microsoft Store, Meta Quest Store, and iOS App Store. If you have added your app to the app store, users can install it from there, just like a platform-specific app. When a supporting browser determines that a web app meets the installability criteria described earlier, it will promote the app to the user for installation.
