It's not even a network, it's a bandwidth reseller. I've been with them for years. Have relatively low expectations and they are great. When things go wrong you have at least a 50/50 chance of it getting fixed. Prices have been creeping up but not quite enough to get me to scoot to something even cheaper. October 20, 2025 - If the answer to all of those is no, then Fi will be a waste of money for you. You'd be better off with Mint, US Mobile, or Visible with their new promo. ... I have unlimited and the service is great. If the price works for you I think you'll be happy with it.

r/GoogleFi on Reddit: Does Google Fi have a future?
June 18, 2025 -

I've been a member since this was just called Project Fi. The first 3-5 years were exciting, regularly filled with "coming soon" announcements including new features and products. Once the pixel was introduced I feel like Google Fi stalled out. Except for a rebuilding of their service plans maybe 4-5 years ago there's been really no changes. In fact we've actually lost some of the innovative features like multi network access that was what drew me in the first place. I had hoped to be part of a network that continued to innovate. The future feels uncertain.

February 19, 2025 -

Finished porting out my number from Fi yesterday to Visible, wanted to write up a quick post to commensurate the 9 years I've been with Fi and start a discussion on how much Fi has not kept up with the times.

I signed up for Project Fi back in 2016 when it was still a "quirky" cell phone provider that sometimes send you merch like socks in the mail. You paid $10 per GB, could toggle between different cell phone providers, and never have to deal with walking into a cellphone store like tmobile or at&t.

Look at how RIDICULOUS my bills used to be.

And now 9 years later, you can get 10GBs of data from an esim provider like Nomad for $15 versus the $10 per GB Fi still charges you. Although sometimes these esim providers have problems with things like speed and the fact that your IP sometimes shows up as in Singapore or the UK so I ended up trying Visible.

For the past 2 years or so, I've kept my Fi on Flexible and relied solely on Visible or Nomad for data, effectively paying ~$55 total a month. Yesterday I had an epiphany and decided to just port out my number, which only took 10 minutes.

Maybe I will see Fi again in November when a sweet new Pixel deal come out, which I never could get when I stayed loyal.

The GoogleFi web messages is one of the top 3 reasons I stay on GoogleFi.

For those who may still be unclear on the particular Google Fi feature being discussed: There are two DIFFERENT ways to use messages.google.com when you have Google Fi phone service. The first is the "normal" way that anybody can use, where you pair your phone to your browser using a QR code. The issues some (like me) have with this method are as follows: YOUR PHONE MUST BE ON AND REACHABLE for this to work. Meaning, in this configuration the browser is, in effect, remotely controlling your phone to send and receive messages. This is a nice convenience, but is a limiting factor compared to the Message Sync option described below. you can't make or receive phone calls in this configuration. if you change computers (or browsers) you have to re-pair your phone, and it's only functional on the most recently paired browser instance. The second way to use it is Google Fi Message Sync. This is an option that is only available to Google Fi subscribers. It works like this: your phone DOES NOT need to be on and reachable for this service to work. you DO NOT have to pair your phone to a particular browser you want to use, just login with your Google creds and you're up and running. you can be logged into multiple computers/browsers simultaneously and they all work. text messages are synced between your phone and the web messages service in the background. you can also make and receive phone calls, and check your voice mail. many/most of us like these aspects of web message sync because it provides a backup available for immediate use if your phone is lost/stolen/broken/forgotten/out-of-service-area. you can still choose to leave Message Sync off and use the web the "normal" way by pairing your phone with the QR code. unfortunately, Google requires you to disable RCS messaging before enabling Message Sync, and this is what we're bitching about, and want Google to support RCS with Message Sync enabled. I hope this explanation helps.

r/GoogleFi on Reddit: Considering switching to GoogleFi, can I get some honest experience with it?
December 12, 2024 -

So I’ve been desperately needing a new phone and on top of that, Verizon has been absolutely sucking (especially for the price I’m paying.)

Since I live in Northern Virginia, I was checking r/nova and was hearing great things about the experience but I wanted something a little more in depth as everyone’s experience can be different.

I do live in a metro area so I do expect good coverage anywhere around the DC area, but I am also on the road a lot and end up working in very rural areas. Ruther Glen, VA being the most recent, it seems not a single person can get service unless it’s T-mobile. I’m also in rural Maryland quite a lot as well as rural Pennsylvania.

So I’m wondering, does GoogleFi hold up in rural areas like I’m hearing about metro areas? And I’ve heard from one person who uses GoogleFi that at random times the phone calls can be absolutely shitty. While I’m not taking phone calls all day, is that true?

I was a Fi customer for 4+ years. The basics work fine and if you never need any CS help or can fix stuff yourself, it's one of the cheapest and best options. If you ever need ANY help, even something as apparently clear cut as getting service for a device you're paying insurance for, good fucking luck. Their CS is SO BAD. I switched to T Mobile for this reason, and they even made that process surprisingly awful and slow. I'd recommend you steer clear and go with a service where you can get support if things don't work as expected.

I have been with Fi since 2018, I'm going to be honest with you, this plan is only worth it for people who travel internationally often, but live in the US or have close family abroad that you call frequently. Coverage, is the same as T-Mobile, they don't use other carriers anymore, so it will vary from road to road, but honestly T-Mobile is pretty much everywhere but West Virginia, I'm sure i have to get an ATT sim card every time I travel there. ** Customer support is horrible most of the time if YOU make a mistake, don't read, don't update your personal information, or anything else, you will be screwed, CS will not solve any issues at all, as well make sure you have a backup email setup, your backup password store in a safe place... I have read enough threads here that could've been solved if any of these prevention measures where implemented. Now, most of the time I tell people to try Visible, it's a great price! But you mentioned that Verizon is not good where you at. So, I'll recommend you to check Stetson's website bestphoneplans and search which plan/carrier/mvno will work for you. Edit **

r/GoogleFi on Reddit: A Suggestion for 2025 and Beyond
April 30, 2024 -

I really like Fi but I am one of those who does not need a family plan.

With my main number with Google Voice, paying $20 + tax just for voice and text which I would not need makes it hard to justify. (Please hear me out ... don't down-vote me yet).

Here's a suggestion for Fi to show non-family plan folks some love: $100/360 days (including tax) - unlimited voice and text in US and maybe Canada and/or Mexico. Data would be $10/GB as in the Flexible plan. This plan will also have data SIMs for those who want/need. You should also be able to use this plan outside the US - like the regular Flex plan.

What would you call this plan? Flexible Plus plan? Simply Flex plan?

I know Google Fi will not implement this suggestion but it doesn't hurt if I put it out there.

Happy Holidays folks.

Google Fi has now reworked their plans. You can now get a plan from them for $35 bucks a month with unlimited everything with 30gb of full speed data, plus a smartwatch for free. Also, their $50 plan includes 50gb of full speed data, and their $65 plan now includes 100gb of full speed data. Still also the only provider with postpaid priority on TMO. Pretty cool for $35

I'm doing some research on Google Fi in 2024. I actually was a subscriber back in late 2015 by invitation when it was called project Fi. Switched over to Verizon in early 2019. I switched over to Xfinity mobile a year ago. Now that the 12 month deal Xfinity was offering by bundling the mobile and WiFi service and save $20 is over im looking to find a cheaper plan.

I currently paying $48 for the 20gb plan with Xfinity and use roughly around 20-25gb. I'm never charged for going over my data cap and haven't experienced any throttling. T-Mobile,att and Verizon all work well in my area ..

Any and all feedback is welcome..... Thanks.

r/GoogleFi on Reddit: Google Fi no longer competitive?
March 5, 2025 -

I'll say from the top that I'm a Google Fi subscriber and have been for several years.

I've started looking around at what else is out there now, due to situational changes. I was unfamiliar with US Mobile until I saw others talking about it and looked into it.

It seems like US Mobile does what Fi used to do, with the network switching. Of course now Fi only uses T-Mobile, which also begs the question of why not just go with T-Mobile if you don't need or want the network switching?

As far as I can tell, the only things that Fi offers over the others for roughly the same price is:

  • more hotspot data with base plans

  • better international pricing

But these things could arguably be cancelled out by perks/features of the other carriers plans. (Ie: free devices for signing up, streaming subscriptions included, cheaper add-ons, etc).

Am I missing something or is there any big reason not to go with T-Mobile, or go with what Fi was supposed to be from the beginning with US Mobile?

I've been a happy Fi customer, but now that I've started looking around, I'm really not sure it's the place to be anymore. Convince me otherwise!

Hello!

Longtime Google Fi subscriber, since 2017. Recently I got an offer from Xfinity mobile for $10/line.

I know that Xfinity throttles sooner that Google Fi, but that's not really a problem for me. I love proper WiFi calling, especially living in the mountains, and I know that some cell phone companies don't have proper WiFi calling (not sure about Xfinity).

International calling is the BIG win for Google Fi, but I don't go to Mexico more than once per year.

Are the any other benefits with Google Fi?

EDIT: this is strictly a value question. Google Fi cannot compete on price with Mint or Xfinity. Are the extra benefits worth the cost?

r/NoContract on Reddit: Is Google Fi worth the cost vs US Mobile
May 30, 2024 -

My mint mobile plan is expiring on June 2 and I’m thinking about switching providers as well. I’m likely looking for a new number as the one Mint issued me is garbage (9-12 spam calls per day). I signed up for Google Fi trial and the new number they issued me seems good, but I am also using Google Fi sporadically as I already have 2 other active SIMs on my phone.

I am torn between US mobile and Google Fi. In my brief research, there are a ton of customer service complaints about Google Fi, but it looks like US mobile may go public soon which might affect their apparently awesome customer service.

US mobile is obviously cheaper and this is a secondary number for me so I don’t need a ton of frills with my plan. It seems that Google FI is way more beneficial when you add several lines to the plan.

A reason I’ve considered keeping Google FI is because of the clean number they’ve issued me, but I can’t port a trial number so I either suck it up for a month and spend $50 to keep that number or take my chances with another number with US Mobile and take advantage of their 3 months $45 promo

I am living in TN if that helps with any advice giving.

I was on Google Fi for a good while with a family of four. $45 each with taxes. Really enjoyed the extra data sims and the international data was fantastic. Was great for awhile until one member started traveling around the country and didn't have signal often and they left. Then the price rose and the other family family wanted off due to the price increase and wanted us to port them out or look for something else. Left us with just two lines and we were not about to pay $60 a line, would have just move to one of the big three at that point. We moved to US Mobile as three lines while the fourth went off on their own. $25 a line with 35GB of data is enough to satisfy us. Once we travel outside the country again, we will just upgrade the lines for the trip and then switch back once we return. So far, no issues and everything works as expected. I wouldn't get worked up over the CEO talking about going public, that could happen years down the road or not at all. Enjoy it now until the next innovative MVNO comes around. There always seems to be competition in this space. Lastly, If you want to be on Fi for a month to claim that good number, do so. Then leave Fi and port to US Mobile. Google Fi will prorate you and refund what you don't use for the billing cycle.

I think the primary consideration is whether you need priority data or not. Google Fi is priority data on T-Mobile, us mobile is the same priority as mint, but priority data on Verizon. Also, as a secondary line, how much data do you need? Us mobile offers better pricing on low data plans.
