I've had Google fi for almost a year. I travel frequently to Mexico, so having seamless international travel was very attractive to me. However, it has never actually worked. At best, I can call Mexican phone numbers, but I cannot use anything else. GPS was a major reason why i got this service. I've held on, hoping it'll improve, and have done numerous tech support requests, but have never had anything change. Any ideas? Or should I give up and find another service?
4 members in my family. All of us have Moto X4. Three of the phones connected in the Bahamas, mine did not. I see no setting different on my phone or my wife's. As soon as we landed my daughter was texting, by the time we got to the taxi everyone but me had service.
Any help?
Update: Here is what I have tried (all a few times).
-
restart
-
switch networks manually
-
reset networks
-
switch between LTE, 3g, 2g
-
Hook to public WiFi
-
Turn on/off phone
-
Cycle airplane mode
UPDATE WITH FIX: I am up and running. I had to turn on roaming data, then make 2G preferred, then turn off automatic network. It connected right away. Then I turned off data roaming, turned back on "automatically select network", then prefer 3G. The only thing is if I turn on prefer LTE it disconnects. The other three phones all have prefer LTE selected. At least I am up and running I just have to remember to turn on LTE when I get back to the U.S.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions. They did help me as I trouble shot. Still no clue why my phone acted differently than the others. But the goal has been met so I am not going to mess with it further!
Like the title said. Activated 2 Unlimited Plan lines today in the USA (worked fine locally) and got on a plane to South America. Upon arrival, cannot connect to any network. Google FI support clarifies via chat this is intentional as I have not been an active customer in the USA for a long enough period to be entitled to the full product.
If anyone from the Google FI team reads this and wishes to remind me that this is entirely within your T&C I would recommend you make this clear to customers signing up. Perhaps you can say “Roaming in 200 countries - but not in the first 3 months”.
Support states per the FI policy it will not clarify how long the USA service needs to be active before global data is available - They literally told me to reach out to them prior to my next international trip the day before I leave to ask if their algorithm magically approved me for using their full product.
Edit: leaving this post up. tried to clarify to potential folks interested in signing up for this service to understand this unique product with global roaming to understand this will not be available to you for the first few months. Buyer beware. If you plan any travel within the first few months of signing up for Google Fi, reach out to their support prior to departure to ask if it will work when you arrive at your destination.
Hello,
I have been a Google Fi customer for over 4 months now. I am on my vacation visiting India and been here for 2 weeks now. I will be returning back to US on May 12th (in another week). My Google Fi physical SIM stopped working yesterday with my Pixel 8 Pro giving a message, "Invalid SIM on slot 2". I thought it was something minor so I went into settings -> Sims -> Google Fi -> Use Sim > disable and then same steps but this time "Enable" thinking it would reconnect. But unfortunately when I do "Enable" the settings goes back to "disabled" status automatically.
As a next troubleshooting step, I went into "Google Fi" app. The app homepage says, "Google Fi is not your active carrier, to use google fi on your device, activate Google Fi". I click on "Activate" button and it takes me to an infinite loop where it tries to download eSim (while I am in India) and goes back to the same screen.
I pro-actively got an Google Fi PHYSICAL SIM before I left the country so I do have a Google Fi physical SIM on my phone. Can someone from Google Fi team please help me re-activate my connection as I need my texts for 2FA validations for many things, not including bank logins.
