Like the title said. Activated 2 Unlimited Plan lines today in the USA (worked fine locally) and got on a plane to South America. Upon arrival, cannot connect to any network. Google FI support clarifies via chat this is intentional as I have not been an active customer in the USA for a long enough period to be entitled to the full product.

If anyone from the Google FI team reads this and wishes to remind me that this is entirely within your T&C I would recommend you make this clear to customers signing up. Perhaps you can say “Roaming in 200 countries - but not in the first 3 months”.

Support states per the FI policy it will not clarify how long the USA service needs to be active before global data is available - They literally told me to reach out to them prior to my next international trip the day before I leave to ask if their algorithm magically approved me for using their full product.

Edit: leaving this post up. tried to clarify to potential folks interested in signing up for this service to understand this unique product with global roaming to understand this will not be available to you for the first few months. Buyer beware. If you plan any travel within the first few months of signing up for Google Fi, reach out to their support prior to departure to ask if it will work when you arrive at your destination.

Currently abroad in the Middle East. Jordan, Palestine and Israel. I'm on the same plan for $70. Here is how it works: It is free unlimited data, the same as in the USA, limited to high speed data for the first 22GB and then throttled. It will connect to 5G, LTE, and 3G depending on network and roaming agreements. You do not get free calling when connected to cellular networks. The price for roaming in different countries is different when connected to their respective cellular networks. If you are connected to wifi, you get free wifi-calling to and from the USA only. Also, if you call a local number while on wifi-calling, the rates will be slightly cheaper. All SMS/MMS is free unlimited incoming and outgoing. Good luck!

I took my Fi w/ Unlimited Plus to several countries. You will get free text sending and receiving. I think you may get a call but I had hard time calling. For data, mostly it's not fast but I used pretty fast speed in Spain last summer. I spent 6 weeks walking 650 miles of the Camino de Santiago. The coverage in Spain was amazing, I walked Irun, Spain to Fisterra,Spain.. and I will say except some high altitude mountain areas, I got mostly LTE and I think I got throttled at some point. I was a bit heavy on data but didn't pass 15gb.

I have a Pixel 6 Pro and I've been on Google Fi for about 7 months.

I currently have the Simply Unlimited plan, but I am planning on switching to the Unlimited Plus plan about a week before my trip to Spain, France, and Italy. I was not planning on getting a separate eSim or anything like that; I was just going to use my phone as it is now.

What kind of data speeds can I expect to get? Google Fi support just says that the speeds will be unrestricted for the first 50GB, but that doesn't actually tell me anything. "Unrestricted" could be 256kbps or it could be 5gbps and I have no way of knowing until I get there.

For all the folks who've been to Western Europe lately, what kinds of speeds were you getting while you were there, assuming you were in or near a medium or large city?

Great speeds in urban areas, not so good in rural areas. Just like in the States. If you have problems with 5G , make LTE the default; same as the States.

I went to the UK, Germany, and Czech Republic last year and it worked flawlessly.
