r/GoogleFi on Reddit: Google Fi - Don't try 7 day trial
May 13, 2024 -

Google Fi seems scammy. If you take the bait and try a 7 day trial to check coverage as a new customer, you are no longer eligible for new customer promotions. They claim you are an existing customer from then on.

Customer service acts surprised (they know exactly what is happening) and will hang up on you without any resolution.

I figured this would get resolved within seconds of calling customer service, but they instead do their best to waste my time, lie and in general behave as if they are a scam or fraudulent business.

Shameful.

Once you activate service you’re now a Google Fi Wireless customer, even on the free trial. Links offered to buy phones are all current customer deals. You’ll have to wait 180 days after canceling your service to be considered a new customer again. There is no resolution for customer service to consider.

I'm probably going to get downvoted, but I do agree that Google doesn't make it clear enough that activating a 7-day trial removes eligibility for new customer promotions. I think it's reasonable for a person to assume a trial to be a trial (e.g., the user could be considered a lead or a prospect), and a "new customer" to be someone who actually activates an ongoing monthly plan. But Google doesn't see it that way. It also doesn't help that this language in the docs can be potentially misleading. That being said.. This is unfortunately a known situation . Also - Google is quite careful in their TOS wording. For example, this promo ended in May 2023, but the very first bullet point states: You must be a new Google Fi customer. A new Fi customer is someone who has never had Fi service or someone whose last day of Fi service took place more than 180 days before making a purchase with this promotion. I do think they can make it clearer by stating that free trial customers will not be eligible as they are considered "new customers" to avoid this confusion, but even at face value it clearly states "A new Fi customer is someone who has never had Fi service...". If you've activated the trial, then you've had Fi service, which means you're considered a new customer at that point. Full stop. It's definitely frustrating, and I don't personally agree with it, but the writing is there. Do I think it is fraudulent or a scam? Absolutely not. But there is certainly an opportunity here to clean up some of the wording.
