Google is a cool thing to have on your résumé, but Google does tech so differently from everywhere else that you will have to relearn a lot when you change jobs. So if you are a good engineer and constantly learning, you’ll be fine. If you get too comfortable at Google, you may have a hard time leaving. I would recommend sticking it around and working hard enough at least to get to L4… or if it’s taking too long to get to L4, switch companies then. For entry level positions, I'd expect a good deal less than that. Probably between $50K - $80K CAD for the first few years. It'll vary depending on the city and the size of the studio you're working at. A larger studio in a larger city may pay more to offset the cost of living increase. And you might get a bump if you land a job for a more in-demand programming role, maybe AI, UI or tools. I don't know if it's true across the board, but my experience has been that entry level jobs are really underpaid. Studios know that landing the first job is the hardest so applicants can be desperate. Once you hit mid-level to senior, that's when you can start shopping your services around and negotiating those larger salaries. And programmer salaries are almost always going to outpace other disciplines, excepting maybe really high profile positions like Art Director or Creative Director. More on reddit.com

February 21, 2019How is the stability and pay of a game designer/developer in the UK?
The pay isn't nearly as bad as people on reddit seem to think it is. Sure, you're earning less than someone in other tech/finance etc., but it's far from the worst. AFAIK most junior salaries are around £28-30k ish, but this might be outdated info.
Stability wise, I personally haven't had much issue working both in audio (AA) and in design (AAA) - I've never been laid off, projects I've worked on have released etc. but at the same time one of my coworkers now has been laid off multiple times in the last few years. With that said, if you're good at what you do and are a decent person, you'll be able to find work even if you lose your current one, it's a small industry and for every studio on the down, there are others on the up!
There are also plenty of people who have had multi-decade careers, sometimes in the same company. I really wouldn't worry too much about the security of it if you are passionate about the industry.

Hey everyone!
I recently graduated with a degree in CS, and I have been lucky enough to get a SWE job at Google.
I have been working at G for about 5 months now, and while I love my job and feel very lucky, I still have a dream about working in game dev (for companies like Rockstar Games, Epic Games, Ubisoft, etc.).
I am currently an Android dev, and I was wondering if any of you have any tips for how I can (in some years) move from being a 'regular' SWE to a game dev. Does Google help at all on my resume? How can I prepare?

I think your best bet is side projects, having google on resume definitely can get your foot through the door, but you will still need to have more ''relevant'' experience as well which would be some small side project games or perhaps less medium-larger ones(don't recommend larger ones as it's preferable to have something finished. So my recommendation would be to continue at google for atleast a year more(as long as it's not miserable for you) and do some side projects/learning on the side and then while still working apply to the companies you mentioned showcasing those side project games

Hi I live in Canada and I am a 2nd year into my game dev degree. I am planning on coding more the less and I was wondering how much should I expect to be paid in my first couple yrs and wanted to know how much ppl are making here on average. When searching up on google I am getting varying results, some saying 115k cad/year average some saying 95 cad/year or less. Basically just want like the general consensus of what to expect here in Canada

Certainly temper expectations, yeah. I'm first year AAA Tech Artist, and I do $52k CAD/yr. Hoping that grows overtime haha. And again, that's entry level. Mid - senior positions will be closer to the higher end of that range, I assume.
