From what I've heard, well-known tech companies can offer up to $250k - $300k for senior SWE, while non-tech and smaller startups offer below $200k.
Is this still true in places like Toronto/Vancouver? If you're a senior SWE in this market, how much would you ask for?

Yeah senior SWEs aren’t making anywhere close to $250-300k. The more realistic range is somewhere between $150-$200k TC (the upper range for staff/principal).

It's usually $300k total compensation, not base salary. Though if you make principal engineer, your base can definitely hit those numbers. They're non-management roles too. 18,000 recent new Google layoffs will also agree with me that this is, err.....unsustainable. You're assuming those are all tech positions since it's a tech company. But they definitely hire non-tech folks too, and are cutting them loose. Are there common non management jobs that pay 300k ? Yeah, roles like software engineers, devops engineers, quant devs, and other roles tied to revenue generating at companies with deep pockets. General IT positions, not likely.

Hi all,
I am an engineer with 2 years of experience currently interviewing with multiple FAANG companies.
My recruiters for Amazon have suggested that I ask for for 230-250k TC which frankly is insane by pre-pandemic standards, I currently earn less than half of this figure and feel almost guilty asking for this much.
Is this the new normal to expect with current trends seeing increased demands for engineers in Canada?
Have you gotten any such offers?
Do you expect them to remain this high?
How much should I ask for if I have a competing offer? Can I ask for 300k?

Post this in Blind. There’s too much noise here in regards to salary (many of these comments are wrong). Fwiw I got a $250k offer from a top tech company in Toronto at L4 with less than two years of experience.
