For most mapping software it's a variant of the A* search algorithm which uses weighted connections (road segments) between nodes (direction changes, intersections, …). The weight usually would depend on the top speed, reported surface conditions, and length. One advantage Google uses is that the algorithm can be parallelized pretty well, so they just hurl a lot of hardware at the problem. More on reddit.com

I've followed the instructions. It gives no option to save the route or send it to your phone. Everytime I ask for directions to the specific destination it defaults to the shitty route I don't want to take. How can this be so complicated? Any help greaty appreciated.

roads have a priority in the real world. all roads have a speed limit and a distance. soooo when looking for a route between start and end, take the distance on each road, multiply by speed limit, add a bit for turns, and boom, thats the time taken. Now just combine with Dijkstra's algorithm for route finding in a graph, and select for the routes with the shortest time. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dijkstra%27s_algorithm Then because you are google and you have a device in half the cars on the road, account for traffic and slowdowns in real time.

I've spent a lot of time planning my road trip out using Goggle's My Maps feature. I really like the ability to plan all stops and preferred route along the way. Now I'm trying to figure out how I can "move" (for lack of better word) my planned route to my phone for directions while driving?
