Hey guys, it is going to be my first time in Cork(Ireland in general). I am going to study at UCC. I don’t like to carry around cash much. Thinking of having a digital wallet. So should i go for PayPal or GPay? Based on which is more popular, which is used mostly, which will give me the least problems and which people just like more( if there is any such preference at all!). And just wanted to make sure, there are going to be QR codes right? Like you’re not transferring money from one person to another by taking their phone numbers all the time right?

Google pay would be accepted pretty much anywhere that accepts contactless card payments, meaning almost all shops. The shops that wouldn't have card facilities are the kinds of shops that definitely wouldn't have PayPal. The only time PayPal is really used is if, for whatever reason, the person you are giving money to can only accept PayPal or cash. In Cork I've only ever really seen this happen at kaizokucon, though there's less of it each year as merchants move on to better payment methods.

Until the OpenWallet protocol is released, wallets are developed, and Google/Apple/Samsung are required to allow third party access to the NFC for payments (EU already did this)... there are no alternatives.

Specifically with Ebay I'd use Paypal, Ebay & Paypal are owned by the same company, whatever private data you give up to one the other probably already has. But Apart from ebay, I wouldn't be using either Paypal or Google Pay unless I didnt have another choice. edit: apparently paypal and ebay broke up.
