r/Pixel6 on Reddit: Review after using the Pixel 6 for a few weeks
May 23, 2022 -

So first let me say that I just really enjoy using the Pixel 6. Overall. It has been a great phone that definitely has speed on its side. But I have run into some problems. Right now I'm actually using the voice typing feature on the pixel to type up this review. It works quite well. Aside from a few small corrections, it gets every word right so I can't really complain about this feature. It's awesome! There are some problems with the Pixel though. I've had troubles with recording videos and the audio being messed up. I've also had some issues with apps crashing and the phone even rebooting a couple of times with a few specific apps.

Camera

So aside from the audio issues when recording video, the camera is excellent. Pictures are absolutely perfect and Google photos handles showing them back to you very nicely. Also a lot of the AI features are very nice and work quite well. HDR on the Pixel is second to none and I have to say that I have greatly enjoyed taking photos with this phone. Pictures are sharp and clear, and they're very well lit and usually have perfect contrast and color accuracy. Really you can't ask more out of a phone camera at this point in time. It isn't a DSLR but it doesn't need to be. It just needs to be as good as the best point and shoot, which I really think it is.

Battery Life

In day-to-day use battery life has been pretty good. I usually get about 6 to 7 hours of screen on time and a good bit of screen time depending on what I'm doing. One thing that I don't like about this phone is that it gets quite hot and the battery also gets quite hot. According to Accubattery Pro It even got up to 112°F (the battery itself) on a 90° day. Sometimes when the battery gets hot, the phone does become a little bit more sluggish and the camera app complains that the phone was a little bit on the hot side and that it may affect video quality. Although, at least that one time it didn't seem to affect video quality. As I've mentioned before though, there are the audio issues with video recording. Overall, the battery life on this phone is so far a winner and wireless fast charging is very nice. Also, I like that it uses power delivery as the mechanism for fast charging as it is an open standard and in the future hopefully more and more devices will use it so that charges you by now will work for many years to come.

Screen

So the display on the regular Pixel 6 is of course a little bit less high resolution than the Pixel 6 Pro. But that's okay. Overall color accuracy is good and the lower resolution probably allows for a little bit of extra battery life. The resolution of the screen is actually less than my OnePlus 7 Pro that's 3 years old though. Unfortunately, this means that the screen on the Pixel 6 is a little bit less sharp at very close viewing. However, this is not been bad enough to bother me. Also, the camera notch doesn't really bother me even though the OnePlus 7 Pro did not have a camera notch.

Machine Learning Features

The on phone machine learning features work quite well. Magic eraser works pretty well depending on your scene. But above all, I think that the life translation and voice typing are probably The top features that use machine learning on these devices. Now, feel free to comment about which features you like the most in this category because I might be missing some. Overall this also plays into performance because it's able to do stuff like HDR on video without a performance decrease. Although again the phone gets quite hot. I think we're seeing a theme here about heat.

Build Quality

There's not a whole lot to say about the build quality of this device. However, the build quality is very good. The body of the device feels quite sturdy. The device is quite hefty as well. It weighs about the same as my OnePlus 7 Pro.

Cons

So some problems I've had with the device include that it gets quite hot. When it gets hot, performance goes down and unfortunately some apps don't work well at all. Like the default camera app. The battery will get fairly hot and charging will slow down as well. I try to charge in a room with AC with temperatures not exceeding 70° f now. That is a reasonable environment. Even in this reasonable environment though sometimes the Pixel gets quite hot when in use and will not fast charge anymore. At least until it cools down. Another issue that I've had is apps crashing on occasion, and even the phone rebooting with a certain app. Although that could be the app's fault. Another issue I've had is at least on T-Mobile. The wireless connections at times are not as robust as I expected. Some of that could just be T-Mobile in my area and not so much the phone. At least in most areas I've been where T-Mobile service is good the phone is done well enough. However, one time I even had it stay connected to AT&T towers roaming when there was clearly T-Mobile signal around and it shouldn't have been connected to those AT&T towers at all. Overall, this phone has been a little bit buggier than I would have expected out of a Google device. Maybe it's just because I hadn't read about Pixels that much for a long time even though I'm a tech guru. It is apparent that a lot of other people have some minor issues with the phone as well.

Mobile Gaming

This is a huge area of upgrade from my OnePlus 7 Pro. Not that that phone was slow by any stretch of the imagination. However, the pixel 6 definitely beats the OnePlus 7 Pro buy a good bit in games. I've played Asphalt 9 and it works quite well on the phone. Other games and benchmarks seem to run very well. They certainly didn't skimp out on the GPU. The phone also holds in one's hand very comfortably while gaming. I'm not a huge phone gamer but when I do I like it to be fast, smooth, easy to hold and so on. This phone seems to check all the boxes. And in reality it lives up to that expectation that I had when I opened the box.

Advantages of a Pixel

Well, I probably don't even need to add this into the review, but I figure it's worth mentioning. The Google Pixels have very good software support for at least 4 years from the release of the device which is very nice. Also, so far some of the bugs I've experienced on other phones have not been present on the Pixel. Also, software support overall is better than for some phones. Although I guess a downside to using a newer version of Android is some apps may not even be able to keep up fully. The speech to text recognition is next to none and does so much better than my friend's iPhone, so much so, it's laughable how bad the iPhone is. The camera keeps up with even the most expensive iPhone in my opinion. Also, Google's camera app aside from the bugs that I've described above is excellent. It's also nice to have a phone that if you do want to put ROMs on it or do anything with it that is not standard. Or if you even want to deGoogle your entire phone, it is possible to do that with a Pixel which is super nice.

Conclusion

As I use the phone more, I may update this review. I hope that it'll serve me for many years and that it'll hold up to the test of time. So far I've quite enjoyed my experience, but I wanted to do a full review on Reddit, especially to show some of the downsides to people who may want to buy the phone. At a $600 price tag. The pixel 6 is a really good device. It's nice in a world with phones that are breaching the $1,200 mark to have something flagship at $600. Overall, compared to the OnePlus 7 Pro it is a bit of an upgrade but not insanely so. 5G is definitely nice in areas where T-Mobile's 5G is available. Aside from the 5G though, ultimately I wouldn't recommend someone to upgrade just yet. The Pixel 7 may be even better and it's not going to be that long until it's released so that's worth thinking about. Also, I think for many the 6A may be a good option as well and is worth considering for the lower price.

9/10 overall

Additional Thoughts The fingerprint sensor is really annoying. It works most the time and I've gotten used to it but how many times I've had to answer my password is ridiculous. It is insane how bad the fingerprint sensor can be. Sometimes it works great with one finger but with the other finger it won't work well at all. I've tried re-registering a billion times and trying positioning my finger different. I finally found a position where it usually works with my thumb. My index finger works fine every time. Just definitely something that is a bit of a downgrade from the OnePlus 7 Pro. Maybe an upgrade in terms of security though I'm not sure. Anyway. Take it for what you will, but I wouldn't recommend this based on the fingerprint sensor that's for sure.

Would you recommend the Pixel 6?
I moved from a Pixel 4XL to this a Pixel 6, didn't get the pro because almost never use the camera. In the early days, the fingerprint scanner was a bit random, but software updates seemed to have fixed that and it works fine now. I use lots of apps, use to stream music and books, watch movies etc I'm no big city phone reviewer but for me, it's a solid device that works well. More on reddit.com

October 17, 2025 - Both Pixels offer a high-end, premium look w/ an aluminum frame and a distinctive camera bar on the rear that’s reminiscent of the visor on the Nexus 6P. You got the latest in scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass Victus on the front + edgeless Gorilla Glass 6 on the rear. Using glass + metal gives it a bit more heft than what we’re used to from Google.

I just couldn’t bring myself to purchase something like the tiny Pixel 5 or the Pixel 5a that is stuck at only 60hz. Yeah, they have the Pixel software, but what I really wanted was that Pixel experience and some nicer hardware. With the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, that’s exactly what Google has finally delivered.

April 12, 2022 - My favorite designs from Google have all featured that shot of black, such as the 2 XL and 4 XL. These phones have that with the camera bar/hump. At first, I was unsure about the rear hump for the camera system, but it’s been fine and hasn’t caused me any grief. Plus, if you’re using a case, it’s even less of an issue when placing it down on a flat surface. As for the Pixel 6’s size, while it feels so much larger than my Pixel 5, it’s been growing on me.
