r/Pixel6 on Reddit: How i fixed my fingerprint reader after screen replacement
September 11, 2022 -

Just had my screen replaced (dont take your phone swimming folks). When i got the phone back, everything worked except when trying to use the fingerprint reader i would get the message:

"Can't use fingerprint sensor. Visit a repair provider or g.go.pixel/fingerprintunlock"

Searching "How to fix pixel 6 fingerprint reader" and variations of that wasnt as helpful as you might think, as there are lots of people complaining about the fingerprint reader being not very sensitive and all that. Searching for the specific error message helped put me on the right track, but there was still no comprehensive how-to for this.

Eventually i found a link to this site, which helped me understand it a bit better: https://www.screenfixed.com.au/how-to-fix/google-pixel-6-6-pro-finger-print-issue-after-screen-replacement/

After all that, what i understand the message to mean is that the fingerprint reader hardware has been replaced and requires a calibration. But you can only do that through a computer.

Here is what i did to fix my fingerprint reader after replacing the screen on my pixel 6.

  • Grab the usb charging cable

  • Pull out my win 10 laptop and open up chrome.

  • download the "Google USB driver zip file" from this site: https://developer.android.com/studio/run/win-usb

  • Extract the "usb_driver" folder to my files (Long ago i created a folder c:\drivers\ for this sort of thing, so i used that)

  • Go to the "Fingerprint Calibration Software" tool on the "Google Pixel Update and Software Repair" site. https://pixelrepair.withgoogle.com/udfps and do steps 1 (turn off phone), 2 (use Volume Down and Power button to enter fast boot) and 3 (plug phone into computer, click "Connect Phone" on web page).

At this point my phone was not showing up in the list of connected devices. "No compatible phone found"

  • in a separate tab, pull up this page. https://developer.android.com/studio/run/oem-usb#InstallingDriver

Ignore the part about going to your computers manufacturers page (OEM) to get the driver.

Scroll down and follow the instructions labeled how "To install the Android USB driver on Windows 10". This tells you how to use device manager to manually update the driver for your phone. At step 7, navigate to where you extracted the "usb_driver" folder.

  • go back to the window you have open in chrome from running the fingerprint calibration software/pixelrepair, and you should be able to see your device now.

  • Follow the instructions.

  • Make sure to restart your phone manually (follow the instructions people).

At this point i was able to add new fingerprints and use the fingerprint reader to unlock the phone properly.

Good luck!

I just had my screen replaced on my Google Pixel 6 Pro this morning and encountered the issue where my fingerprint sensor needs to be enrolled and calibrated. · I followed the instructions to use the Google Tool and on the first time after completing Google's installation and restart of my device while plugged in on fast boot mode, it didn't work. · I tried again, placed my phone on fast boot mode, plugged my phone to connect to my laptop to access the tool via browser and it installed it again and restarted my phone. · What I did differently this time was read what was on the webpage, it says to restart my phone again to finish calibration (after Google restarted my phone, I restarted it again)—now it works. · I am not sure if this is a stroke of luck or a step people missed because Google already restarted for you. Perhaps a UX/copywriting issue on the processes detailed on the screens. · In any case, maybe others may verify. · Thanks! · PS another thing to note when doing screen replacements is that do not forget to remove the protective film on the replacement screen that mates with your camera, I experienced this and thought my front camera was broken as it was just showing a black screen.

Google Pixel 6 fingerprint sensors may not work after a screen repair
February 18, 2022 - For whatever reason, some repairs for the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro's fingerprint sensor either result in a situation that can't be calibrated, or the calibration process itself is remarkably non-deterministic and can fail for no apparent reason. Even original screen hardware and sensors can cause the problem to occur, and replacing the display multiple times or factory resetting doesn't make a difference.
