Has anyone else tried this? Google recently came out with a feature called notebook podcasts where you can upload any pdf and it will turn it into a podcast with a man and woman talking about it in a realistic conversational manner!
This feature has recently gained popularity as a study tool to explain lengthy documents for medical/law school. But it can literally make a podcast on anything.
I tried it with the first 4 chapters of my book and it did an incredible job of picking up key themes, plot points, and character arcs, and talking about them in a realistic way like a real book podcast would! And the podcast “hosts” were very funny! It was cool to feel like an author for a moment like my book was a real book being reviewed.
Let me know if you try it!
Also here’s something funny one of the “hosts said about one of my characters that had me laugh out loud: “I question does he actually believe in karma as much as he thinks or is it just a convenient justification for his actions?”

On the other hand, this has the potential to be devastating to those that teach. I showed this to some of my instructor colleagues and they are afraid that it will eliminate any need at all for students to read. Things are already bad with the students, so how worse could it get? I asked this to the colleague and the colleague responded that it's bad for the students, but it could also be bad for the instructors as well.

It's neat. I'll admit to putting in one of my stories and even having fake people talk about it like some grand piece of writing is an odd motivator. I do wish it generated longer audio, as the "deep dives" are typically like 10 minutes, on average. At a recent conference, they showed off the ability to interupt and act as a "caller" to the podcast to steer it towards different topics and that will be a game-changer. It's currently at that uncanny valley stage where the voices are so natural sounding that its super weird when they screw up. Even the text is still highly prone to silly mistakes but it's a free service so I can forgive a lot. I really hope NotebookLM doesn't just end up on the pile of abandoned Google products because it'll be amazing if they keep developing it.
