Folks from Toronto working for tech giants, how's the salary and PTO like compared to other companies in Toronto?
Can confirm. I got two offers, one from the Bay Area and one from Toronto, both for big tech companies. In terms of total compensation, Toronto's is roughly 40% less than Bay Area's, and that's not taking into account conversion rate. I mean I would be satisfied by the Toronto salary ( > 100,000 CAD), but seeing the Bay Area salary makes me feel cheated by the Toronto salary. To be fair though, the average Canadian developer makes roughly 80,000 CAD, regardless of level, so I should be grateful. But honestly, there's a lot of great talent here in Toronto who would be equally as successful in the Bay Area but getting paid a lot less, mainly because the tech hiring market isn't as competitive yet (and feeder schools like Waterloo and UofT creating huge supplies of new grads). It doesn't help that the government's strategy is capture migration of big tech companies north is with lower salaries for tech workers, relative to their US counterparts. We're just a glorified outsourcing hub for US tech companies. The company I currently work for have explicitly made this obvious by firing many US workers during the pandemic and now rapidly expanding in Canada and the UK, for much lower salaries. How much are Senior SWE making in Canada nowadays?
I have never ever ever ever seen these salaries for senior software engineer in Canada. The only time I have seen such a thing is when a San Francisco based tech company was employing in Canada and it was around 200-210k. I'm pretty sure there are some offer as high as 200k, but personally never seen such a thing. More on reddit.com

A Recent Google story reported that the median salary at Google was 300k, and that the average is higher than that.
First off, it's not 300k salary. Stock options & RSUs make up much of the total comp for technical staff. Many of the administrative and support roles are handled by vendors & contractors, so 'average' is going to be skewed higher than at a company that directly employs their support desk and clerical staff. Answer (1 of 2): I assume you are asking about people in the tech fields, as opposed to, say, accountants (for whom I have no idea). Yes, for sure, tech roles are paid a lot higher in the US, especially in the top markets, like Bay Area or NY. But if you are employed remotely in North Dakota, the...

r/cscareerquestions on Reddit: Folks from Toronto working for tech giants, how's the salary and PTO like compared to other companies in Toronto?
February 11, 2021 -

Past few months, I interviewed with 2 tech giants and I got the impression that they don't pay well. The recruiters gave me very low range (wayyy lower than what I'm making now and what I usually get from other recruiters). They told me they can match my current salary if I provide proof after I told them the range was way lower than my current salary. Plus the vacation days are less than what I have now and they weren't willing to match at all. I didn't get offer for one of them and I ended up rejecting the other one. Am I just getting bad teams? or this is how it is in Toronto?
