Your data in Search
Your Search history is saved to your Google Account as part of your Web & App Activity, along with activity from other Google services.
Can someone still see my search history if i turn off google activity?
Turning off Google Activity (specifically Web & App Activity) stops Google from saving your searches and browsing history to your Google account. However, this does not mean your search history is completely private. Here’s who might still see it: 1. Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) – Your ISP can still see your search and browsing history unless you use a VPN. 2. Your Employer or School – If you’re on a work or school network, administrators may track your activity. 3. Your Browser History – If you don’t clear your browser’s history, searches may still be visible there. 4. Google (for a Short Time) – Even with activity turned off, Google may temporarily log searches for spam and abuse detection. 5. Your Device Logs – If your device stores search history locally (like Chrome’s autocomplete or search suggestions), you’ll need to clear it separately. Think twice before thinking you are off the hook for any „special“ searches. Also, don’t use Google Chrome for trying to hide searches. Use Mullvad Browser, TOR browser, Brave, just to name a few. r/privacy on Reddit: How long does Google keep browsing search history for people who are NOT logged in?
February 15, 2024 -
Assuming someone is not logged into their Google account when they are browsing, how long does Google actually retain the individual’s search history? I’ve heard they have “server logs” for the purpose of advertising where they will keep the data for a long time, even if the history is cleared by the user, but the information is unclear. Does anyone have any idea?

The better question is, why would they delete it, unless mandated by law? Google is in the business of information, and data is gold; whatever they can keep, they will keep, either associated with your cookies, or your IP address, or your locality and date/time of search, or adjacent searches, etc. If you wish to ensure that your future queries on Google are not associated with your previous one, you could change your apparent IP address through a VPN, clear your cookies (not merely for the Google search page, but for all of their services, including all ad analytics, YouTube, GMail, etc; since many websites depend on Google APIs, you would be safest just clearing all cookies), change your browser or fake your user-agent, and never log into your Google accounts that have shared IP addresses or cookies with said queries. Furthermore, you can increase your privacy by using an aggregating search engine (such as a SearX instance) that does not pass unnecessary data to the ones it browses, or use a privacy-focused search engine.
