For some background, I just graduate with a bachelors in physics and have a data scientist position at one of the largest telecommunications company in Canada. I'll be starting at about 60K which I'm happy with.
So I got a pretty negative reaction from people in r/PersonalFinanceCanada when saying that I plan to make 150K a year in about 5 years. I was under the impression based off some research that I should be able to make this much (bonus, stocks included) if I can get to Shopify, Wish, Microsoft, etc.
However, now I'm curious. If you work in Canada how much do you get paid and is making 150k as a data unrealistic with 5 years experience?

It really just depends on how good you are. With only a B.S. in Physics, 150K is steep, but not entirely out of the question. You'd have to really supplement your foundation with strong math and CS knowledge, and be able to demonstrate it through both achievements and interviews. 100K seems entirely within reason if you're decent and driven, though.

I’m not in data science, more data engineering, but also at a large telco in Canada, who I’ve been with for nearly 13 years. During that time I’ve had the privilege of seeing company wide salaries. There is no one in the company making 150k base salary, unless you are looking at the director level. You MIGHT get there with base salary + bonus. But realistically, base would be ~100-120k for a senior position. Not implying we work for the same telco, but assuming it’s fairly consistent between them. So your best bet would be to get some experience under your belt and hope to land a job at a tech company
